My muscles start to lock up if I’m OFF the bike for too long. Have spent so much time in the saddle this week. What a crazy week.
-
Different senses
-
Taste buds greatly intensified
-
Hydration levels apparent
If I’m slightly off in potassium or water, certain body parts start to tingle, then hurt.
I basically eat my way to the bike everyday. I eat and drink until I feel ok. Then I get on the bike again. If I wake up. I get the on the bike. Commute? Bike.
/out
Honestly, I wanted to go bike at 9pm or something then 10pm now its 11:37pm. I got all set up at 9pm, then froze. Shit. Literally froze, legs locked up, couldn’t move or might tear something. So, stuck. I’m near the sink. Deep breaths. Oxygen, oxygen, oxygen. Ok. I mustered up enough movement to healthily reach some water and then chugged enough water to move my body. Possibly 1 Liter. Then I could move. I’ve been walking around my complex with my 3L Camelback when I’m off the bike. I go through 3L water in the heat like no one’s business. Like to my mailbox and back after a day session. If I don’t have 3L to my mailbox in the heat walking, I’m at risk. Risk for injury walking… I might only need 1L fine, sure. But, what if I need 2L? This sort of ridiculous shit is the level I’m dealing with right now. Water levels to get to the mailbox. lol ok When I’m on the bike, everythings cool. I feel like I don’t overtrain, but this endurance side of the equation is something I have heard about (like how it is hard at the end of a full Iron bike portion to squeeze the bottles, so people get those straws on their handlebars), but its all just surreal. I really get it for endurance athletes, its cool and all. But this shit is insane. Luckily I get another tracker tomorrow and I’m going to geek out and wear 2 watches. ® Fitbit Versa + (L) Garmin. I need to keep track of calories on the Fitbit system and the Garmin will add a Galileo satellite as well as long battery life for long rides and especially peak day. I would like that ride all on one piece and this Garmin should be able to handle that. I’m going to test it out on a 80-100mi warmup ride on Monday for a planned 150mi peak day on 9/6/18. I was thinking today though, I could be fucked on the plane somehow if my muscles start locking up. I shouldn’t push too hard on peak day in intensity, but maybe surefire endurance, which is my specialty. Death endurance. For 150mi, midnight to midnight.
Bananas at gas stations = winning
Also, something else. I was in the bath today doing physical therapy with my feet elevated on a bamboo stick and kind of fell asleep and then woke up and was thirsty and the water was clean and so started drinking and then fell asleep again, maybe REM. I woke up again and was doing some nerve training/testing on my hands with the water on my back and realized my eyes were still closed and could see my hands pixelated with my eyes closed. Bigger blocks (square looking) closer to me flowing down like arcs into the fingers, specifically the smaller blocks going to where the water was hitting the fingertips (very small square blocks). It was insane. I actually did take some bong hits earlier, but not acid. Jeez. wtf. Was like that Ben Affleck character. I don’t think that the rain/water theory of seeing is a myth anymore. Its interesting though, in a grad school 700 Neuroscience class that I took a couple years ago, we studied neuroimaging of phantom limbs. It was a very surreal moment for me and reminded me of this discussion with a bit of a twist. The real phantom was my eyes. My body was telling what my eyes should see. The 5 senses became 4 and compensated. Fucking surreal. Burn 8000 calories in one day and survive and you will see things. I had my shirt off next to an approaching car coming from behind about to hit me changing lanes, and felt the heat of its movement in just enough time - to jump out of the way, before getting hit …yesterday. Some real crazy shit. Been trying to keep a log of everything and the 2 watches will provide all the data you fools could possibly need.
out out ! isaiah PS - I only know / have met ~20 people on here and only hooked up with one, so don’t really mind getting into some of the crazier stuff in these posts as CW has surely set an example (I love you CW, we all do), but its nice to keep a log for some of these moments. My cycling videos help me to keep my sanity. Being on the bike for five hours a day is a blur. The videos tie it together.
Damn, I can’t stop eating. This next day is going to be surrrrrioussssss… I got delivery. This is what a late dinner looks like.

I know I know Tilapia and Steak from IHOP? I dunno, I’m gonna try it. Taste buds are not really on pure taste anymore, but straight up bodily needs.
Got some new bottles today. Up to 6 good bottles that I can use. I might start collecting those 24oz gatorade bottles, but would prefer the better grade bottles (I need about 20-30 bottles I think, not sure how many I can fit in my freezer. I am going to number them 1-30 and by calorie/electrolyte levels). I feel the Gatorade ones are slightly easier to drink at exhaustion as the main force comes from the shoulder to turn it with your teeth if you grip the bottle hard. Its pretty hard to squeeze bottles after a while and sucking starts to go as well. I don’t want to get a straw on the front, thats too motivated looking. I just want to be the casual rider, pumping out the distance.
Not that you can’t use your teeth on these^ … its just that the Gatorade bottles are lower effort, so might save them until the end. The Gatorade bottle is very well engineered for endurance athletes. It requires like zero effort to open. You slightly move your arm and just kind of press your teeth into it and it turns. Pretty good container for $1.29 at the store.
keep us updated ace.
word
thanks man , appreciate the support I should be getting this Garmin tomorrow at Best Buy, finally a watch rugged enough for my activities.
Igor - you coming out for the meetup on Sat or race on Sun? It would be nice to see someone I know in the same heat and KMD will have just finished her 8:45am heat.
Friday
Had no idea there was a meet up
when is it?
AF Dinner on Saturday night in NYC (Sept 8). KMD what time were you thinking - I’m pretty open.
Might be only a couple/few, but open to anyone who is around (ohai never shows up…).
I barely know what foods I like anymore, I have to try them out. I used to really dislike beets and beet juice, but now I can’t get enough of the stuff, it tastes great to me now.
9am hits in less than 4 hours. I will remember 9am as the time. 9:00-9:05am. That is my race time and my visualization is good for the exact time of day, when visualizing race day performance and duration. Every day I am going to try to start training at 0530 on the dot, just like I will for warmup on race day for a peak at 9am. That is the plan from here on out. I think I have normalized my circadian rhythm. I think I’ll still go pretty hard in my 0530 morning sessions for a few days, then adjust to a more race-day style workout (warmup then heavy heavy intense peak from 9:00-9:20 (its a bike, so maybe 20min equivalent). And have my burnout sessions at night to recover for the 0530 start.
By the time 9/9 hits, I should be ready to start my warmup for my 9:00 heat at 05:30. Wake up / shower / possibly green tea then Nitraflex preworkout. I’ll probably walk out of the door of the Dylan on 5th ave with my shortboard warmup and skateboard to Planet Fitness and just kind of chill and stretch there, maybe get an espresso or coffee somewhere along the way. I’m going to have to ditch the shirt at some point. Maybe they can take it at the race? I’m not sure what time I want to get to the race though. Will probably skateboard there. I guess I’ll put a tag on my board so they keep it/send it to the finish line? I don’t usually do those things, but really want to skateboard around before the start as it kind of reduces anxiety for me as well and my flykint racers work pretty well as skate shoes on my Penny board. Also, there has been a lot of crap that has happened just in general in the past two weeks and I’ve kind of been like fuck authority cycling around the city as it has gotten me so pissed off about drivers and said fuck it and really have just been wearing oversized headphones everywhere even at night, even around cops and it seems like it is ok. Some drivers just blare on their horn around me though behind me especially when I wear them which I think is ridiculous because my hearing is probably better than theirs in the enclosed dome they have on wheels with loud sounds coming in a confined space. But anyway, I usually race in what I train in and it is oversized headphones. I’ve read the rules and they are legal, but probably offensive to some race officials. There is some discussion about headphones especially among runners/cyclists in general and in races, but for God’s sake it is a straight 1600m dash. No turns. I think/hope I won’t piss off too many race officials. I’m not completely trying to be gaudy, but just respond well neurochemically to suprior audio when working out. There have been tests that have shown this can be like steroids for some people. It certainly is for me, and I really need to focus on that race. Not only on my running and how hard I am pushing myself, but on my form and what muscles I am using to propel myself and max potential with those muscles, just like cycling. In cycling you know how you have to change positions as certain muscles are fucked or fatigued, and it is similar with running. I feel like you have less options with running, but there are a multitude of stride changes and striking/position/hip changes that are possible in the course of the race. Some people stick with one stride and stay steady betty but I like to mix it up. 8 min to train out Isaiah
