My 7 year-old gas grill finally broke down last year, and I haven’t replaced it. Don’t know if I’m going to. Gas is quick and easy, but it definitely has drawbacks. It’s dangerous, and it’s easy to get flare-ups (especially with burgers). But moreover, the quality of the meat is definitely better on the BGE than on a gas grill. Even your mistakes on a BGE are better than a success on a gas grill. (Don’t believe me? Try a “gas” chicken breast and an identical “BGE” chicken breast. The BGE will be juicier and have better flavor 100% of the time.)

My local grocery store sells Strike-a-fires. (But I light them with a lighter.) They will get the fire started. Then I have an old hair dryer that I use to get it hot. I wouldn’t use a Looftlighter. Those things pull a LOT of electricity, and it takes forever to get the fire going. (If you do use one, you’ll need a 3-gauge extension cord. With extension cords, lower-gauge = more capacity.)
