I got 5 acres of land in San Luis Colorado as a gift once. Never been there but it seems remote enough. All I know about the land is that it’s undeveloped, basically worthless, and I get a $70 property tax bill every year.
If the world went to sh1t you wouldnt need to “own” anything. If you find a nice secluded place take it. And if you have your own place dont expect others to respect your property rights. Thats where guns and ammo come in handy.
If there is a financial crisis, if anything happens to the US dollar, nobody is going to accept your bitcoin, your gold, nothing. The only thing they might accept is food, seeds, animals, guns, ammo. And if you do find yourself in a situation where somebody does want to trade something you have, it’s going to be the most tense exchange ever. Similar to some of the drug deals from scarface. A lot at stake, in a bad area. Chances are they’ll ambush you and take your farm.
You’re ignoring the fact that “owning” the place now allows you to make the preparations we listed above. Good luck showing up and “taking” a property from a prepared survivalist, especially if you’re one of those beta male cubicle jockey new york types.
This is exactly the point. You choose somewhere remote, off the track, and prepare it. I think owning woodland could be an advantage that you can use the wood for various things… but you would also be looking at some arable land to grow crops etc. tinned beans will only keep you for so long.
Getting to the location should also be considered. Sure, i plan on jumping on my motorbike but fuel is going to be an issue, and quickly, if things heat up.
I have given this situation more thought than I care to admit anywhere other than an internet message board. Some of my closest friends and I have made a pact to purchase a plot of land together in the Western United States. The primary reason is that we all find “Big Sky Country” to be among the most desirable places to visit or retire. However, we also recognize the possibility that civil unrest could make it difficult for us to live in large cities. We are already at a point where 47% of Americans are dependent on the federal government. What is going to happen when we hit the 50/50 tipping point? Some Americans will simply vote themselves a share of the federal treasury. How long can that process be sustained?
99% of the US is wiped out and you think gold is more valuable to people than, say, a producing farm, clean water or tools/knowledge to survive. Good luck with that. I’m not selling my venison jerky for useless metal.
It depends on the level of civilization collapse. At apocalypse level 10, maybe gold is worthless. But at levels 1 to 8 or so, gold will still be useful. Think of the Middle Ages or so. Civilization was still a bunch of lords going around raping peasants (at least based on the movie Braveheart), but gold still had high value.
Of course, as laws break down, it might become increasingly important to build defenses for your gold stockpile.
