Hey guys, I just wanted to know your opinion on how likely I am to land a decent job in finance with my background:
I am pretty much spanish/ english bilingual and have a very decent grasp on german.
I graduated from a public unknown university with a degree in Business Administration. The education was very good, but the name isn’t. My marks are 7.1/10, so my equivalent GPA is 3.1/4. My father was sick for the last 2 years of college and had to take care of him, so my marks resented it.
Internship opportunities here in Spain are pretty much non-existent. Also, there is absolutely no financial industry where I live (The canary islands). Therefore, I’ve never worked in a financial institution before.
I passed cfa level 1 last december in my first attempt, and I enrolled to take the 2nd this June. Truth be told, I think I’ll pass it.
I am 24 years old currently working in accounts receivable in a 4 star hotel (I’ll turn 25 next June). The general manager wanted to promote me to his personal assistant, but the HQ wouldn’t let him for now.
Be brutally honest. Any advice is welcome, specially from the insiders.
What AF will tell you: you have 0.000001% chance of lending a FO job, bla.
What I will tell you: you are a European national so move to Germany, improve your German, and interview in financial firms that are looking for people with your background in languages, you will find some.
What kind of finance job do you want? This is all pretty moot as finance is a huge field and we have no idea what you’re looking for.
If you’re looking for just ANYTHING finance related, I think you’ve got a good chance if you go find a solid job on the corporate side ASAP. You need to get out of doing AP for a hotel. You’re probably going to have to move to do so, knowing what I know of the Spanish economy. If you’re looking to be a big shot hedge fund manager in 2 years time, then I’d say you’ve got no shot.
