I am sure financial engineering is mathematically complex…but really in a lot of cases it can be done in 8-10-12 months with no previous finance experience (just a math/cs/engineer background that shows you have taken some mid-level mathematics) On the other hand, even an undergrad in engineering that lasts 5 years tends to require 3 years of focused study on the subject while the previous years was to get the math/physics background. It is a very focused degree with very little choice in terms of electives (such as wanting to do a minor in xyz). I am generalzing, but in most cases, this is how the engineering curriculum works.
