i actually agree with you somewhat here. there has to be a very good reason why the saudis are always allowed to operate in the shadows on this front (for decades, not just now). my guess is they just threaten to hyper-inflate the oil market if the US steps out of line. So naturally the right way to get off the snide here is to drill baby drill. Trump would love nothing more than to bury the saudis, but he can’t do it until our strategic position improves.

I actually believe it’s the other way around. The Saudis do exactly what we say (keep oil low to pressure Russia…guess we’ll see if Trump sticks to that) or we turn them to glass given they’re the most egregious terrorist state out there (probably).
If you think about what cheap oil has done to the welfare state that is Saudi Arabia, there’s no logical reason for them not to jack the price. They need oil >$50 to support their social policies. Instead they’ve helped to keep it cheap for a while now.
If SA really wanted to poke us with a stick, they’d threaten to undo the petrodollar. Of course, the last time a country in the Middle East threatened to do that we invaded and destroyed them.
