SoâŚitâs almost Thanksgiving. All of the teams have had their byes (or have them this week). Itâs time to pick division winners.
As far as I know, the only team that has officially been eliminated from playoff competition is Oakland. But itâs fair to say that the Jets, Jags, Giants, and Skins wonât make it either. I would add the 2-8 Buccaneers to that list, but theyâre only two games behind their division leader.
Starting with the NFC:
East - Dallas and Philadelphia have a de facto tie. Theyâll still play each other twice.
North - Detroit and Green Bay have the same record, but Detroit beat GB earlier in the year. Theyâll still play each other one more time.
South - this division sucks. The best teams are 4-6. But somebodyâs got to win it. New Orleans and Atlanta are tied, but Atlanta beat NO already. They meet again at the end of the year.
West - Arizona certainly has the lead here. But theyâre without Carson Palmer for the rest of the year, and they have to play Seattle twice and @San Francisco.
And in the AFC:
East - New Englandâs probably got this division wrapped up. Miami is two games behind, but they beat NE the first game of the year.
North - virtual tie for first place. This division may very well field three playoff teams, and we wonât know who they are until the last week of the season.
South - Indianapolis has a one-game lead over Houston, and has already beaten Houston in Houston.
West - The only thing we know for sure is that Oaklandâs out. KC just lost to Oakland, and they still have to play Denver, @Arizona, @Pittsburgh, and San Diego. San Diegoâs schedule is even worseâ@Baltimore, New England, Denver, @SF, @KC. Denver definitely has the easiest schedule.
May I also addâŚfor the most part, I like the NFLâs playoff system the way it is. Win your divison, host a playoff game. There are two wildcard spots for those good teams that deserve to go to the playoffs but just happen to have a really good team in their divison (like KC last year, for example).
And if you add the fact that you play your divison opponents twice, then you see why the NFL has the best rivalries in sports. You donât ever hear the NBA talking about the need to beat X team so they can win their divison and go to the playoffs.
That being said, I wouldnât mind if the NFL imposed a âwin 8 games or you donât go to the playoffsâ rule. If you canât post a .500 record, then I think youâve really lost the right to be in the playoffs. EG - the winner of the AFC South this year (if the playoffs started today) should forfeit their playoff spot to somebody in the AFC North or AFC West.
^ I canât agree with keeping a division winner out of the playoffs regardless of their record. I could get on board with giving home field to a wild card team if the division winner has fewer than 8 wins and/or the wild card teamâs record is much better than the division winner, say 3 more wins than them. For example, wild card team is 11-5 and division winner is 8-8, the WC team gets to host.
