Post-Interview Thank You notes

Yeah, I hate it when people shake my hand after an interview too. If they don’t punch me in the face at the end of an interview I consider them too much of a pushover to work for me.

Not really. Friend of mine sent an e-mail. Followed it up with a telegram and a letter by post. Not the one to take chances, he sent a note through a carrier pigeon as well. Unfortunately he lost out to another candidate who had somehow managed to find out the interviewers’ favorite radio channel and in addition to all the above, also sent a thank you message in Morse Code at that frequency.

Priceless, what a nutbar. My take on it is that a thank you note is not required. You have either made the right impression in the interview or not. You have the skills or you don’t, you have the personality or you don’t. End of.

All jokes aside, I think a brief typed professional thank you letter in addition to a customary thank you email are nice gestures. It shows you want the job, but you are not desperate. I did this after an interview and once I was hired, they complemented me on being one of only two candidates that sent a thank you letter. The Company was a large financial institution. It took me two minutes to put together and mail and I think it made a difference in the end. Just do not go over the top.

E-mail is fine. Prob a small +ve. Anything else is just weird.

When we interview people we often have a small meeting at end of day to go over the candidate. From there we come to an agreement if we choose to move forward. While a note is nice it really will not help much. Maybe other offices are different but this has been my exp.
