^Yes, but I didn’t say racism didn’t exist in small towns so Greenman’s story doesn’t contradict my point in any way. What I did say was that Mk’s blanket statement was false and offensive to me. Oddly enough when the owner of the LA Clippers spouted his statements, noone lined up to say, “The last sentence was huge coming from a guy living in big city California. There is hope in this world.” Because that would be equally stupid.
So reading comprehension fail I guess.
We’ve had this small-town racism conversation before; almost verbatim. I’ll reiterate the point I made then. Small towns may seem less racist because there’s less diversification. That is, there’s no one to be racist towards and no reason to really bring it up. Conversely, in large cities where many differernt races come together, while that exposure may breed tolerance in the long run, it also gives more opportunity to be overtly (for lack of a better word) racist.
tl;dr - people are racist everywhere. It’s just more subtle in smaller towns.
(I’m going to quote myself. I’m feeling that badass today.)
I should have written that as “that exposure may breed tolerance.” A very diverse community may also reinforce why people seriously dislike some certain races. Some stereotypes are true and some people choose to dwell on them. Just a fact of life.
^ I’m fine with that. I said “if anything, I’d say the opposite were true” as a side statement at the end. But if you read my first post, the heart of it was “I was shocked at how much more racism I encountered when I first moved to a larger city after college. The idea that small town people are all small minded and backwards has been in my experience without basis.” which is not different from what you’re saying (that it may be more open in cities, and that people are racist everywhere). So why the need to attempt to disagree with me other than for the sake of making noise? I just remembered why I stopped posting here. I don’t see a huge difference between the dengration of rural populace for supposed beliefs without clear factual basis and any other form of stereotyping.
Also, I do have to laugh at repeated claims from people that small town people are just as racist, you just can’t see it, like Santa Clause.
No reason to be a dick. I find the fact that somebody is racist enough to throw out a (possibly) black persons resume more offensive than some guy on the internet thinking people in small town Texas are racist. This is not an argument, just how I feel.
Not everything is directed at you BS. I was just putting my thoughts out there.
Welcome back buddy.
I wasn’t trying to compete over which was more offensive Brainwash. My bad STL.
I edited my comment to be a dick then just removed it, so…all’s well.
this thread is a 3/10, i figured there would be real racism here
