Does that mean once I’m in operation, I’m stuck with operation forever?

All the analyst jobs I applied are asking for experience, now you are saying passing exams is not doing much, pretty much I’ll just have to sit here and rot?

Unfortunately, yes. Firms will hire new grads or experienced people for analyst jobs.

I have a feeling that Former Trader’s observation is correct, but I would not cut your losses just yet.

I recently became an analyst after working in Ops for over two years. As luck would have it, my interview amounted to a verbal exam of the CFA Level I curriculum (which was still fresh in my mind); however, the biggest key to making the Varsity Team for me was making connections with the other analysts. During my tenure in Ops, I wore a suit nearly every day, I maintained a positive presence in the office, and (most importantly), I did my job well. When a position finally opened up, they chose me (the known commodity).

This is inspiring ofthedivision17. I’m guessing you are pretty young, so you still fit in “new graduates” category.

I spent my first year out of college in a sales role with a large insurer before taking the Ops job with my present employer. Last month, I was finally promoted to a fixed income analyst. In all seriousness, the Ops job was a blessing. It allowed me to get in the door of a reputable employer and earn a steady paycheck.

You are pretty lucky. I got my foot into the door 5 years ago and still have no luck moving up yet.

Two of my coworkers got out of operations through applying for jobs after they passed CFA exams. They both worked in operations for 5+ years.

I am interetsed in risk management but CFA is more broadly accepted and sounds like FRM is not easier than CFA either. I think I might just keep what I’m doing.

it’s not entirely your fault. You’re living through the worst era for this industry in 80 years. Blame your parents for conceiving you either too early or too late.
