To what end would you take the job?

I know of a senior analyst (reputable firm) that has a reputation for overworking his associates.

Normal hours are 7am - 1am 6 days a week, frequently 7 days a week. 40hours in 2 days has happened. You will not be getting a huge bonus (think 10k or 15k max). Base around 75-80k. His past 3 associates have all literally had emergency room visits (migraine, chest pains etc).

For those looking to break into finance, would this be worth it to you?

If I was in my 20’s and single. Hell yeah. It’s only temporary - not like you are gonna work with the guy for years.

Anything after that would seem so easy.

Plus, when you work that much, time absolutely flies. Trust me.

Nope, especially if thats in NYC which I’m guessing it is, and I’m mid 20s and single. I used to think I wanted to break into that type of finance, until I realized I could make 80% of the money working 45 hours a week, along with having ample vacation time and other benefits.

a position like that forces itself to be a temporary situation, how long could you realistically sustain that workload? I went to undergrad with a guy who landed a similar gig (same base, 100+ hour workweek, $50k bonus). He lasted three years, then went back to school, but his quality of life at the time was terrible… he would literally eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at his desk while working.

He’s since moved into private equity, and is much more comfortable, probably glad he did that job but doesn’t miss it. You probably need to think of a job like that as joining the army - do your time and get out when you can

What’s your definition of ‘reputable firm?’

If it ain’t GS, MS, KKR, Blackstone, or Citadel…you know what to do…

^ It is one of those. come on. we’re the wielders of rusty hacksaw

^Respect.

I wouldn’t be so sure I wanted to break in…some sort of ego contest of whose hacksaw is the biggest?

I wouldn’t do it. I value my quality of life.

I see a bunch of 40 year olds with ton of money all the time bitter that they didn’t enjoy their early years. You can never buy that time back.

Exactly! I’m already moderately bitter that I didn’t live up my uni years to the fullest (damn that LT girlfriend) so I’m sure not about to lose my 20s, especially since I have the time and disposable income to enjoy it.

Agreed. College = no long term GF = awesomeness

I only heard of associates making Analyst work hard, not the other way round.

^This…livin up my 20’s since I had a LT gf in college…to be fair I had two ~one month breakups in college where I did mad work…naw mean?

First few months I’d learn as much as I can there… then I’ll only work 80 hours a week max… if I get fired, so be it and I move on.
