Hanging out in the woods with a bunch of dudes is about the gayest thing a guy can do other then actually have sex with a man. So it makes sense to let the batty boys join in on the fun.
I earned my Eagle Scout award over a decade ago and still volunteer for the scouts in a small capacity today. I support their right as a private organization to set membership standards, but I also believe that including gay scouts and leaders is the correct choice.
In high school, I hung out with a majority African American crowd (and by majority, I mean the only Caucasian was half/half guy). One of my boys lived with me my senior year, since he had poor people problems and didn’t have a home anymore (mom evicted, homeless, you probably know the deal). Anyway, sometimes we’d go kick back in the hot tub (no homo). A year or so later, that guy came out of the closet. No one would’ve guessed (we are talking 6’6 280LB monster). The first question all my friends asked “Would you chill in the hot tub again?” I never understood why that even mattered. But it really seemed to matter to them, even though they were still friends.

All I could think of is everytime I joked “no homo” about the hot tub, it was probably offensive. Oops
That’s some strong words from a dude on analyst forum. Guys on PUA/Bodybuilding forum probably say the same thing about us. I was a scout and it was the only way I got to explore the state of IL outside of Chicago. Looking back, I had some great adventures. Futhermore, it is probably one of the few things that kept me out of trouble unlike so many of my peers.
I joined the Boy Scouts because my grandpa and dad were both Eagle Scouts. I earned the designation too and still get respect from random people when that fact comes out 20+ years later.
My experience was that every single type of dude was represented in Scouting – all ethnicities, shades of nerdiness/coolness, jocks/D&D guys, fat/skinny, etc. I’m sure there were a few closeted or prepubescent gays among our ranks. It really didn’t matter since the average age of most scouts is about 13-14 years old. Of course, this was an age and time when people still played “smear the qu**r” and didn’t really know what that meant.
Scouts was one place where being popular or unpopular in the “outside world” didn’t really matter. We just enjoyed hanging out and going camping and hiking on a regular basis.
