- For those who have worked or are working in industry: a. How much (if at all) reading of academic finance journal articles have you needed to do for your day-to-day operations? [J. of Fin., J. Alt. Inv., etc.] b. What academic finance papers have you found to be important in your studies before employment? ----------------------- 2. For anyone (industry or academia): What journal research articles would you say are very important to read? [aka: considered to be the canonical big papers] Thanks very much in advance!
As a practitioner I try to follow related academic research. I would suggest reading books, journals, going to conferences and staying in touch with friends in academia.
journal of portfolio management financial analyst’s journal journal of investment management journal of finance The last one is the most academic; I find the others to be “academic quality” in terms of rigor, and actually more useful and digestible in terms of content.
I try to read FAJ, and the FMA journal. These two I have found to be rather practical. Not much time for journals though. WSJ, FT, and other news publications take precedence. Most journals are way to theoretical to be useful in day-today operations IMO. I could imagine my bosses eyes rolling, then glazing over, if I tried to explain modigliani-miller to her or make a case for why we should consider using real options to value our firms capital projects. The real value for me is being in touch with what is on the cutting edge of financial thought. The rigor also helps with reading comprehension and enhancing my own ability to understand and explain complex topics.
Great, thanks guys. Not sure how you access your journals, but I can get access to almost all journals for all dates via VPN to the Boston Public Library, which has a nice feature that you can use Google scholar to search their catalog…so nice.
hello everyone … im a recently joined staff. im not a graduate with finance background and hence im given a post which is 1 level lower than analyst which is assistant. according to my senior, they are however trying to train me up to become an analyst(at least this is what they told me). im trying to work hard on how analyst write reports and am learning through the reports. but what i get is only the in house report and i couldn’t find journals? can someone gimme some idea on where to get all those reports? your kind response is much appreciated by everyone especially me !!!
Professional journals should be WAY more applicable then academic journals. (I spent six years in grad school reading the academic fin journals.) Any, many top profs occasionaly publish in professional journals, just a little bit latter.
Awesome…good to know.

Could you name those you found helpful… Thanks
Gouman, Funny you mention using real options to value capital projects. I’m reading the article “The Options Approach to Capital Investment” from the Harvard Business Review right now.
My experience tells me that most academic research papers are edited for an academic audience interested in the validity of the knowledge, rather than its practical application. Practitioner oriented publications often translate valid knowledge into digestible ideas. Therefore, I personally would not look at academic journals for practical know-how, ever. Though you may occasionally find something useful in academic journals, I’d love to hear more about which practitioner publications people are reading. That said, academic journals are ranked by impact factors. According to the social science citation index, an impact factor ranking provided by Thomson, the top 5 financial journals, per 2007, are: 1. J FINANC 2. J ACCOUNT ECON 3. J FINANC ECON 4. REV ACCOUNT STUD 5. REV FINANC STUD For more details you may want to look here: http://admin-apps.isiknowledge.com/JCR/JCR?RQ=HOME (note that you will only gain access if your employer or school has a subscription to the service)
