Ace's Training Thread.....(not for snowflakes)

I wear the Garmin and the Fitbit (different arms). Garmin is actually saying I burn more calories than the Fitbit. But, I’m not used to the Garmin data yet, so still relying on the Fitbit charts and sleep data and stuff to derive conclusions. The battery on the Versa is incredible. Its a great calorie tracker for me and very light. I think I could wear it under my wraps when I start kickboxing again, but can’t wear anything in BJJ. The battery on the Garmin is very good as well. ANT plus kicked in with my Cyqliq and my front light/camera on my bike comes on sometimes when I walk near it and cuts off when I walk away, but I can’t figure out how to control it fully yet and it seems cool, but has been slightly annoying lately as I am trying to conserve battery life as well, but definitely cool to have a ‘knight rider’ kind of setup where your bike lights up as you walk near it. Overall, training going well.

I was thinking of wearing a brace for the race just to hold everything together, and then maybe 2 light braces on my knees for symmetry in weight, then just thought I could get some MMA pants to wear instead of running tights, so might sport the Venom Gladiator 3.0s. I have these in the shorts and the material is great. Its a little heavier than a running tight, but hopefully is tight enough but not too tight around my knees. Would wear 18" patagonia boardshorts over these, no shirt… not sold completely until I test them out though. These Venom Gladiators come in tomorrow. I like to get well acquainted with every piece of my gear as it helps psychologically to put the brain in a mode to only focus on new stimuli and race performance.

I reset my bluetooth and that morning ride came up on Strava. Yay! Man, that is so demoralizing when you work hard and no effort is recorded. To think I used to ride without any tech at all except for music.

Today and tonight I really need to keep my nutrition and hydration up - for training and recovery. I’m running out of certain things like gels and gatorade, but have some coming in the mail today and might make it until tonight.

I only had espresso this morning before riding and some coconut water and then after had an omelette as well as maybe 3oz of salmon and a large salad. The juices will be good throughout the day, but if that toast doesn’t hold me over, I might have to make some moves and order more or go to the store as I am running completely out of food here. Honestly, since that 8,000 cal day last week, I’ve just been tearing through everything. I’m so high maintenance right now, everything is driven by my hydration and nutritional needs. I rode over 100 mi last Monday and came close to 8,000 calories, but I think my metabolism really kicked in sometime in the middle of last week. I don’t know if I could live like this on a regular basis and am looking forward to backing off a bit after this weekend. MMA only had me going at 4000-5000 calories on average, nothing like this. Part of the reason is that over time, you need to grip the bar very tight and move certain muscles certain ways in order to keep going, which turns cycling into a full body exercise. Its just your legs when you start training, but it eventually becomes your whole body. I’m pretty restricted to cycling about 2,000-2,500mi of elevation per session currently as I just get really hungry. If I wanted to ride heavy, I’d have to take a backpack of gels and stuff to put at the base. I had huma gels which seem healthy, but have Gu coming in today which I think are not that healthy as they are chemicals, but maybe should be ok for today. I was thinking I could try to put a bunch of Vega in the back bottle, but then would only have the front for hydration/electrolytes. Maybe at night/dusk. In the day I run through everything very quickly, making it extremely high maintenance to go out and train, depending on the heat.

You have a very expensive habit. I admire that.

Edit: Maybe I meant hobby and not habit. I have a cold and am heavily medicated.

Who the f spends $144 on breakfast for one person? ACE must be a beneficiary of a trust fund or something.

^ lol riiiight I invest a lot in my body. Some other bro is spending $144 at the bar tonight. Is it so wrong to invest in my good health and performance? Image result for please eyes gif

Excess nutrition is good insurance against injury on heavy days as well.

Those Venom pants are sick. Although, I didn’t realize they don’t have a cup pocket built into them. What the hell! I didn’t even notice that upon ordering. What MMA activity doesn’t use a cup? Real odd. They are really awesome though. Material is the same as the other Venom Gladiator shorts I have and would be great for snowboarding or other stuff too. Perfect for the race.

At 14,193ft climbed on the bike since Monday.

I really wanted to be higher, but spent some time switching equipment and trying to fix my Madone’s gears today which was a pain. I wish I had a bike tech who could fix stuff really quick, but those guys hate walk ins with quick demands. I spent my last two sessions on the steel framed Jamis, which was ok. I miss the carbon fiber, as I feel I can be a bit more explosive, but will see what I can do with these last couple days of training.

I gotta 65m ride on Sunday from Birmingham into the Wales borders, through some of hte national parks and into the hills. There’s arounf 3500ft of climbing… i think i might die.
