Background Check - How thorough will it be? (given FINRA requirements)

So, a few weeks ago, I posted a thread asking for help with an assignment (analyzing a mutual fund) for an interview. With your guys’ help, I got the job offer!!

Here’s the thing. I’m in my early 20’s and they wanted a list of all employment for the past 10 years. So… that means they want my random middle school and high school jobs. I provided pretty much every job except a couple of my oldest jobs when I was like 14 and 15. The third party verification company cleared me as far as previous employment goes, but when I called HR and wondered if we were set… they said not so fast. They have their own compliance department that will use the verification company’s finding as mere ground work so they can conduct their own investigation over the next few days. This is freaking me out, not going to lie. They apparently are really strict about this because they want to avoid getting penalized from FINRA regulations.

There’s a good chance I got W-2’s from those two jobs I’m talking about, but I made so little and it was so long ago that we didn’t file taxes and my dad doesn’t even have those W-2’s (and he is super organized with all his and my prior tax info). What do you think? Am I gunna get my offer revoked because I left out my first couple of jobs that I have absolutely no information on? Is there a good chance they’ll find these jobs?

I highly doubt they’d care about your jobs when you were a teenager UNLESS you were a mule.

How odd are we talking here? Illegal-odd?

Like an ump and some camp assistant. Did those for a couple of summers/weekends during school for a couple of years in middle school/high school. You would think they wouldn’t care about that… but it says on the application… You understand blah blah discrepencies blah blah must rescind offer blah blah.

Don’t worry about it dude. They’re not real jobs. Def not imp enough to cost you your job. I wouldn’t include anything from high school but if I has to I’d only include junior /senior year jobs. And that’s pushing it too imo.

Congrats on the new job. Have a blast until you start. Good luck.

I wouldn’t worry about it. I’d be very surprised if they dinged you for those

Agree with others, 10 years history for a young guy like you doesn’t actually mean 10years history, should be fine. If I had to go back that far and include my paper route etc it would be so dumb because I never signed a contract for that job and was paid cash in hand so zero audit trail. If you called good old mr Patel now, he wouldn’t have a clue who I am. Seems very odd they want such history.

+1

And if they do ding you for it, then you probably don’t want to work there anyway, because they’ll always be dinging you for all sorts of stupid crap.

And if they ask, just say, “Oh, those were part-time teenager jobs. I’d forgotten about them, honestly. Do I need to add them?”

Congrats bud. Make us proud.

Just put “full time student” or “unemployed”. I just went through FINRA screening and it worked fine for me.

Dude if you don’t have your w2 for your middle school jobs you’re not only in trouble with your soon-to-be compliance department but you may also have issues with the IRS.

Kidding – the Finra thing is really about professional experience. I’m sure they don’t care if you forget to mention you delievered pizzas in college.

You have the type of personality that makes you constantly worried about something. I know quite a few people like you. You will always find something to worry about. If it’s not this, it will be something else in the future.

Find some confidence before your nervous personality ruins everything.

When it comes to big things… absolutely yes. For instance when I was an intern… very worried about whether I’d get a full time offer (a process behind the scenes that I was trying to figure out how I could potentially influence beyond doing great work). I am not generally a nervous person though… at all. Pretty chill. When it comes to really significant life events I overthink all the details.

I guess I should also add… They called today and cleared me for employment. You all were right, nothing to worry about!!!

^ respect. Go get it brah!

lolzars. I should have thought like you. I juss degafed when they asked for 10 years exp. So my finra report includes my fast food experience at kfc. hahaha.
