BIWS and Industry Specific Modeling

Hey guys, been out of school a bit over a year (hacksaw) and am currently in a portfolio analyst role at a Institutional AM firm, but am looking to make a switch to credit research. I talked with a hiring manager, and one of the things she stressed was having “industry knowledge” (which one would only get from having worked for years covering a specific sector, but that’s besides the point).

One of the areas that we need help covering is O&G and utilities (industrials) and a bit with banks. My question is this: Would the BIWS industry specific modeling videos help at all in understanding some of the industry dynamics, or is it pretty much how just how to project the statements, calc equity value etc stuff that I’m not overly concerned about since it’s a credit role. I know that at the end of the day, nothing beats talking with the current analysts, which of course I am doing, but thought that the videos might get into some of the more technical features specific to these industries.

I appreciate any input, as I am just beginning this process. Chur

why dont you like profolio analyst>

Well, because our shared services team has pretty much been dismantled since I’ve been here, I’ve taken over a lot of the reporting respoonsibilties for the portfolios that my group covers, so it’s very redudant and I don’t really get involved in the strategy of portfolio programs and determining SAA. Plus, how we are structured, I work on behalf of a business unit PM, so I’m not an analyst for a tactical PM (the actual buying and selling of individual credits), which would be really interesting.

As to why I want to switch, I interned in credit research and it seems like an ideal place for someone that likes fundamental analysis, following the industry sectors etc. something that my job doesn’t really incorporate. Plus I have a decent amount of contacts in the group so it makes networking much easier.
