Bloomberg Professional vs. S&P Capital IQ

Looking to choose a data provider and can only afford one initially.

My investment mandate allows for both equity and fixed income securities.

Who has experience with either of these and has anyone got a preference?

I suggest taking a look at our Reuters Eikon platform… send me an email at nigel.cummings@thomsonreuters.com and I will respond with some information.

If you’re going to be trading bonds, Bloomberg all the way. No idea how good Bloomberg is with equities (at least decent I would imagine), but it’s king for Fixed Income.

I have experience with 4 different data providers including the two you mentioned above. As someone else pointed out, bloomberg has the trading platform. They also have good commodities data for commodities that are traded OTC.

S&P Capital IQ has the highest quality and cleanest financial data among vendors, and much of the data is auditable straight through to the source filing. Capital IQ also has one of the strongest estimates offerings, covering ~45 concensus estimate data points, unlike any other data provider. Its also web based, likely cheaper, and has a better excel plug in to automate your models. If you’re looking at fundamental equity/FI, I’d go with Capital IQ.

Give me a shout if you have any questions.

If you haven’t done so already, I’d recommend getting in touch with each provider for a free trial. That’s the best way to test them out.
