Hi guys, I am a recent graduate trying to break into equity research. I recently passed CFA level 2 and I have being managing some money for a while now with positive results. Dont know how to attach my resume here but would love to get some advice as to how I could network effectively and meet people in the field. Thanks!!
I would recommend taking a financial modeling course. Wall St Prep or BIWS seem to be the best.
Then start an investment blog. Once you do a research piece on a company put it on your blog.
As far as networking I can’t really help you. I just applied to all the research jobs I could and mentioned on my resume/cover letter that I took a financial modeling course & have modeled out companies (in addition to the CFA). I brought copies of the reports and the blog address to the interview. I think that helped push me over the top.
Good luck. And update your status on here Level II passer. That is a big milestone.
I’d also like to hear more advice on this. i have a little over one year of experience in FP&A for a small company ($150mm in revenues) and recently passed L1. Looking for more ways to network and differentiate myself
Read the articles in my signature. That would be a good start.
Along the lines of financial modeling, does anyone have experience with the Investment Banking Institute? If so, what did you take away from the program? I’m curious.
Thanks guys! Can anyone introduce anyone in equity research who could potentially help? Thanks!
Did you read my articles?
^lol that dude wont make it 100%
^ LOL
Sorry for the off-topic, but can somebody tell me whether it’s worth getting the “fundamentals” course from BIWS if I’m very comfortable with Excel? Given the CFA curriculum can’t I just jump to the advanced financial modeling course?
Any input would be appreciated.
Not to be a jerk but ER isn’t exactly the easiest thing to break into.
That being said, you have to be absolutely meticulous with your writing (there is a typo in your original post). If you can’t convey messages now what makes you think with little/no sleep you’ll be able to hang? Just food for thought - do some serious soul searching; I realized it wasn’t for me after said soul search.
If you are comfortable with excel try doing a youtube search for financial modeling. There is a ton of free stuff on the web and the only way to feel confident with financial modeling is doing it on a regular basis.
