I am looking to migrate to Canada and my goal is to pass the Level 2 exams before I do. I am currently in Nigeria where I am in the Financial Intermediation industry. I will like to know if I have reasonble chances of getting a job in the investment space with a level 2 CFA in Canada or if a MSc Finance will ve required.
Really depends more on your contacts there. I dont think MSc Finance is REQUIRED for anything…neither is CFA level 2. These can help you speak knowledgably but first you need to get the interview.
high percentage of asian students at the unis just start knocking out designation after designation. a lot of people graduate with their level 1. Devalued the low levels of the cfa. Communication skills and networking are the best ways to move ahead if you have other ‘necessary’ requirements
Agreed, networking and communication skills will set you apart. So will passion. These is benefit in taking practical courses like a financial modelling certificate to supplement your formal education. This will allow you to learn through real word examples and when you’re networking you can get into examples of models you’ve build yourself. Obviously CFA is great, but a massive time commitment.
I find people are really receptive to you when you can speak passionatly about your own personal invesments or anlaysis you’ve done in the past.
Many of these asian students can’t communicate properly. They heavily rely on their community to place them in banks or in other companies. Like Chinese student thinks that he/she doesn’t need to network with anyone else except Chinese. They get fooled by those 0.1% students who managed to get a job because of their talent.
This is my experience while communicating with these asian students. If you struggle to write a decent page of report in english then how do you consider yourself qualified for investment management jobs?
After writing my CFA level one in Toronto which I passed I finally realized moving to this city based on CFA level one would be fucking big mistake for me. I better find job in Accounting company and move forward to grab financial analyst jobs later. And Hell no retail banking.
toronto is the worst place to be if you are a recent graduate looking for a high finance job. One of the graduate moved there to be a equity research analyst couldn’t manage to get a job not even in banks… people told him not to but who cares…
I’m in Toronto and just like previous posts, CFA l1 is garbageman stuff. It’s over saturated and it’s honestly getting silly. I got a job for $45k and that was pure luck. I graduated in 2012 and now I’m back in Toronto (from living in Florida) and I will be lucky to get $45k. That will be the day. The qualifications now for $40k jobs and up are 3 + years of experience and bilingualism. Toronto companies want everything for nothing and they have the right because there are sooooo many applicants for the same job. No lies to you guys, but I lost out two boutique jobs to MBA guys. One was for $40k and one was an internship. Ya… put that on your sausage. MBAs working for free in Toronto.
So I wouldn’t say its the best for finance in Toronto. Honestly, I’m looking at Calgary and Saskatchewan. I will colder winters if it means I can have a good salary.
