Is anyone familiar with this exam or how difficult it is? Several job postings for treasury analysis prefer this certification. Being I enjoy treasury analysis and wish to jump in, I thought I would check this exam out on AF. Best, KJH
I checked it out. Looks pretty easy relative to CFA Level One. Only one book to master, and the sample questions do not appear too tough. The material is unique and very interesting IMO. However, the fees to take the exam and become a part of their organization are high for such a low scope designation IMO. I would only bother with it if you are completely committed to a career in treasury management. I don’t see it being much of an asset outside of Treasury.
The cost is a large deterrant. However this certificate is listed in job descriptions which is what made me look further into it. I imagined the CFA Designation would outweigh it.
I would have to agree, CFA in general probably outweighs it. However, I too have seen many treasury job posts that do not mention CFA but specify CTP. So, maybe with some employers CTP has more merit. I’m keeping it on my watch list for possible future designations. Right now my focus remains on CFA. If I end up in Treasury some day, I’ll probably eat the cost and sit for the damn thing.
doesn’t the CFA outweigh everything? I feel like I should be able to walk into an operating room and say “don’t worry, I am a CFA charterholder, I’m pretty sure I can figure this little heart surgery thing out…”…I love being a CFA snob.
I’m a CTP and work in the Treasury Department of my company. Not saying the test is easy, but the first time I took it, I had a major hangover and forgot my calulator and failed by one question. The test pales in comparison to the CFA, but in my department, people are encouraged to get the designation. With the proper amount of studying you should have no problem passing the test. The results are given immediately too…imagine that!

It’s good in the sense that you learn a lot about the Treasury functions. Also by passing the test it shows your commitment to the field. But I felt that in order to really advance my career, I needed to pursue the CFA designation.
how much studying would u say u need to do to pass the CTP? one of the big reasons why ive been staying away from the cfa lately is i want a social life.
A month or two at the most. Nothing like the time needed for the CFA. There are some overlappinh topics already covered in the CFA. Totally doable with a decent amount of preparation.
it is a joke. please do not compare this to the CFA in any context.
I wasn’t comparing the CFA and CTP in anyway. They are apples and oranges. The CTP is good for those in the Treasury professional. Get over yourself. The CFA is not rocket sciene. It just requires a lot of studying…

KJH, are you still job hunting? Didn’t you have a few leads in the Treasury direction a while back?
I had a treasury interview way back in Nov of 07. Then I had an investment analyst and portfolio manager associate interview in Feb 08. But aside from that application responses have been slow. Recently I got a cold call for a treasury position in a very large institution. The position looks awsome and I feel my interview went great likewise. Jobs are listed, but obtaining the interview is rough.
