CFAI Mock Exam AM question 37

This should be a very simple question, unfortunately I approached the calc in a different manner than CFAI.

Theoretically, when calculating this value weighted return from the exhibit 1 cannot I simply take the begging market value weight of each security and multiply it by its return for that period, sum them all up and get the market value index return total?

CFAI simply divided ending MV by beginning MV minus 1 to get the MV return which should render the same result but of course it doesn’t. Any reason it wont or why my approach was wrong? There way was much easier no doubt.

I don’t have access to the exam but your way should work. Would need to see your calcs to see what went wrong.

(MV of security in index/ total index MV) × %return for measurement period.

Summation of each security in index using previous formula.

They, CFAI, did (ending index MV/ beginning index MV) minus 1.

Answer should be the same I thought. I did it 4 times and answer is not equal.
