change of curriculum

hi there, i took the level 1 exam last week and fancy my chances. can you let me know if the curriculum content for level 2 changes a lot from year to year and how it compares - purely in terms of volume - with level 1? cheers

Hello, well i thought the 2010 material for level 2 was quite similar to 2011( around 80% similar or even more), so sure you can definitely start your revision using 2011 material untill the 2012 material comes out. As for the material, there is alot of overlap with level 1 especially in FRA and equity, and derivatives, level 2 just goes into more detail and there are some new topics added as well. I wouldnt suggest starting this early though, but then again this is just my opinion. Good luck and hopefully we both get to pass!

thanks mr_moose i don’t plan to start this early either. assuming i passed L1 i would start, say, september (to be on the safe side). Just wanted to get my head around it that’s all.

Quant material is unlikely to change year over year so I’d start with that which will be plenty of fun

haha yeah loads n loads of fun.

yes september sounds just about right, you can cover the material two or three times at a relaxed and slow pace if you start that early. this ofcourse assuming you use mostly schweser. I only went back to CFAI for stuff i didnt understand.

also, i think the ethics text is largely unchanged so u may want to leave it at the end as there is nothing new

Someone made a list comparing the LOS from the 2010 Level 2 test with the LOS from 2011.: http://tailieuso.com/news/22/CFA-Level-2-Curriculum-Changes-(2010%2d2011)-lastest-update.html Most of the changes are really minor, except they took out the section on LBOs, added the stuff on inventory methods (which is super easy), and changed up the capital structure/dividend policy stuff a bit. Its like 95% the same though. I’m sure you can’t go wrong getting started studying the equity valuation methods, since those are a big chunk of the test and are unlikely to change.

thanks for the link KilgoreTrout

As a re-taker, I had used this site: http://www.finquiz.com/cfa_level_2_curriculum_changes_2010_2011 I had the 2010 books, and the 2011 e-books. This curriculum change hinted me off that the longed-lived assets and inventory sections were in, but DOL/DFL were out…among other things.

When do the new curriculum books come out usually each year? both cfai and schweser…
