Cold Emailing Groups Heads at a Bank when you want an interview?

I am in the process applying for two positions at a large bank in NY and like many others i have no confidence in the online application process on the bank’s site. That being said does anyone see an issue with emailing Group Heads via Linkedin to try and get an interview?

Thank to all for your thoughts.

In this kind of market, everything is fair game. You got to do what you got to do to stay ahead of the other 10 unemployed fighting for the same position.

I once directly emailed the head of HR for this specific reason. I applied online for a role I was mildly interested in (but not a good fit). I then emailed the head of HR explaining I applied online but wasn’t a great fit for that role, nor that interested. I described what I was really looking for, and asked to be kept in mind for anything that may come up down the line.

I also explained that another motivation for emailing was to go more in depth about my background than I could through an online application.

…didn’t think it would amount to much but was contacted almost two months later for the type of role I was looking for and went for an interview.

The approach and execution is what matters imo.

^ Good stuff!

There’s no guarantee it will work, but more shots on goal and putting yourself out there isn’t something that will likely count against you. I say try it

I would say go for it as well, but be thoughtful and considerate in your approach. Keep it short, and have some empathy for your reader.

Say that you understand he/she must be frequently sollicited, but that you are reaching out directly because you are highly committed to this application process because XYZ characteristic of the firm/role really appeals to you, that you believe you are a strong candidate because of 1) 2) & 3) compelling facts about you, and that you welcome any opportunity to follow up in person or via a quick call, with this individual or one of their team members if they can point you in the right direction. Show that you are prepared, polished and have done some research on the firm and position. Ideally find a connection (went to the same school, grew up in the same country, member of the same network, etc).

It would be even better if you could indentify the hiring manager and/or the HR contact running the search. Group heads are easier to find, but if they’re several levels above the position you’re applying for they may not give your email the time of day unfortunately (I’m assuming that by group head you mean someone who runs a division or activity, but maybe you’re referring to the head of a smaller team).
