Hey guys,
I am still figuring out the optimal length of my answers in AM session. So I have given some thought to the topic of command words, as the CFA Institute repeatedly states how important they are and that you need to pay attention, which leads me to the following question:
What exactly are the differences (or maybe nuances) between the command words analyze, critique, discuss, evaluate, explain, interpret, judge, justify, show and support.
To me they are mostly synonymous (especially in the CFA context, as explanations should be short and to the point). They all ask you to provide an answer and then a short justification of your answer. I cannot find anymore differences there.
Or are there some nuances I am missing?
Thank you for providing your thoughts on this.
Best, Nestor
As a retaker (failed band 10) - I would advise that there is value in knowing the nuances between the various command words. The CFA website (on the same page as the previous years’ exams) has a great PDF doc that lays out the differences. Its worth a read when you’re in need of a productive break from studying.
On a different, but related note, on exam day ensure that each question is read carefully. I lost a few easy points on the morning session (Econ and Equity) all because I didn’t read what the question was asking for… if I had, I probably wouldn’t be typing on an internet forum right now.
Thanks guys, I saw that pdf. That is where I got the command words from.
Still, it is not clear to me how the answer would differ if for example the command word is justify or explain. To me the response would be exactly the same. I just cannot see the differences.
