Misery loves company, so I have to know if anybody else here goes through this also. On a daily basis I called off the desk into my boss’s office to help him through some inane procedure like, not exaggerating, making sure he attaches a file to an email correctly. I stand behind his chair and watch him struggle through this and try to calmly walk him thought it while all I want to do is bash my head against the wall. What’s frustrating is the guy is a dinosaur but also is a multi-millionaire, so I can’t figure out why he is still working. Anyway, I’ve lost my temper a couple times recently, and there has to be other people other out there who deal with this sort of thing also.
One of my bosses would call to do simple summation in excel. Hated it.

Anyway, it’s probably a compliment they ask you about something so simple: they have to admit they don’t know that simple little thing, and you wouldn’t want to admit that to just anybody who walks by.
I think skipE99’s assistant can sympathize.
Maybe the guy is in his 50’s, give him a break I’ve heard of bosses not reading emails on the computer and having someone print them out.
He’s in his late 60’s.
What do you expect? Have some respect. When you get to your 60s and the new technology is beyond you, you can do the same. I would feel gratified to have my boss ask me for help rather than someone else. If you help him out unreservedly, you will have every chance to become the next millionaire. Doing this simple thing might make your career trajectory a lot steeper in a shorter amount of time than doing a thousand other things for less well placed people. It surely takes you a few seconds to help hime out. I really dont see your issue - unless he is a miserable bugger too!

If I were you I would focus on my communication(esp. writing) and people skills. What do you think your worth will be in your 60’s by the way?
If your boss isn’t an arse and he treats you well, what’s so bad about this?! This is such a great opportunity for you to get on his good side and be useful and indispensable.

Nice. “My boss, needyhelp, gave my project proposal the thumbs-up”. Hope that makes you happy, and also understand what it means.
huh? Anyway i dont understand your sudden hostility. We posted before without trouble but now you seem rather agitated. Got my mba several years ago from a small school which wasnt a leader in business but top school for my major.
I like Thumps, Nerdhelp! Hehehe. And I know exactly where deadalus is coming from. My boss (early 50s) asks me computer-stuff so simple that I can’t help wondering if he is kidding me. Like, “how do I write an email back to this person?”. Of course I am more than willing to help him, but when it becomes too trivial, I get angry about the time I am wasting.

Except that MBA question everything else was a joke, I have no reason at all to be hostile to you - I like your style and sense of humor. I have mentioned that before. You once mentioned that you have a colleague at work from a top business school who never really understood what he/she was doing. The impression I got is that you are also part of this anti-MBA crowd. My apologies if that offended you.

So a multi-millionaire is choosing some random guy, the same random guy, to assist him with basic tasks? It sounds to me like: a.) You aren’t recognizing a good thing when you have it b.) This guy obviously trusts you / likes you for some unknown reason The attorney’s in my office are all totally illiterate with computers. They always come to me for help. Thus I can always go to them for whatever mundane legal needs I have (remember JTLDs architect thread?) Being in the position of trust is a good thing. Don’t ruin it. And if you do, let me know first so I can have your job?
Wait idly by. You’ll have his job soon enough.

What about this. You send a long email that probably took you about 30 minutes just to edit, explaining the results of some test, you attach a spreadsheet or whatever chart to your email, and you send the whole thing to your boss. 5 Minutes later, he calls you up, “so Mo, what’s this ?” … and in my head I’m like " Can’t you read the F**ing email? " … Whenever he sees an attachment he just double clicks
I love my boss … he’s old (over 60) and still active, I admire his achievements, he made his money selling currency options for LEH before I was born. Dirt poor to super wealthy. He has his kids working for him in other businesses he owns. Treats me like a son.
