Credit Analysis

Would appreciate some perspective on the requirements and potential paths for a career in Credit Analysis.

Background: Currently, I’m at a moderately sized VC firm in SF; assisting with due diligence, valuation, portfolio analysis, etc. (I don’t source deals, mearly assist in their evaluation once they reach a certain stage). Undergrad degree is in Mathematics, and I also picked up an MBA a few years ago (for those who find it relevant - undergrad was from a well respected school wtihin the Science/Math community, masters was from a largely bland school that’s outside top 50). Just sat for L2 in June. I enjoy company-level analysis, but think I would find analysis of public firms (specifically their debt) more interesting than that of early stage firms (more art than science).

My specific inquiries is, what is a potential entry path into a credit analysis and what kind of roles are truely accessible?

Appreciate any feedback, thanks!

Your math background is going to be important and probably more relevant than a non target MBA. If your undergrad is as good as you claim it to be, definitely highlight it in your resume.

Wells Cap frequently posts openings for its junior analyst program. These entry level positions are the only viable way to get into the industry as an analyst in my opinion. It takes a long time to learn the nuances of working in fixed income so companies don’t want to hire anyone without experience.
