I have this question. can you help

An airplane has 2 engines and the engines function dependently. The probability that the first engine fails during a flight is 0.1 and the probability that the second engine fails is 0.2.

  1. What is the probability that both will fail during a flight?
  2. What is the probability that either will fail during a flight?

There’s not enough information to answer either question.

Nevertheless, I wouldn’t want to ride in that airplane.

to confirm my understanding, we need to know what is the probability of A and B as extra info to solve the question. right?

For the problem to be solved one should know any of conditional probabilities P(1st|2nd) or P(2nd|1st)

Should this have been independent/independently rather than dependent/dependently?

I’m afraid the information you provide is not sufficient.

To understand the probabilities of the two scenarios, we need to know what which one is dependent variable and which one is independent variable; and to know the probabilities for each possible scenario.
