Just let me know when the meet is - I’ll be there too.
I live outside Boston but I bought a cheap house and remodeled it completely so my cost basis is pretty crazy and I’m reluctant to move. Plus, I love NE. That said, total comp is up like a third so it seems we’ll be headed south. Career wise great, but very sad to leave.
I actually almost moved to Boston last year, but decided against it. What do you like about the area so much? Or, is it just that it’s home now?
Boston’s amazing, let me count the ways (and I say this as someone who loves Philly as home).

The public school system is #1 in the country. We have our oldest in a private school, but the community there and experience has been so phenomenal that I think the school is the single biggest reason we’re struggling to leave.

Most importantly for me is that in 2-3 hours you can get into ME, NH, VT, CT and RI. There are a virtually unlimited number of day trips to really cool locations (Burlington in the fall, Newport during the summer and fall, Portland Maine for food, seaside or mountains of NH, etc). You also have all the great cape locations like Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket 1-2 hours away. It’s ideal for sailing, you can row on the Charles, ski in VT, etc. Very great for being active.

The city is pristine and growing with a scholarly feel to it and if you’re into winter all the better. New England shines most IMO in fall and during holidays, which they do well.

It’s an upper income state, so in line with the highly educated nature, things (in my mind) have a clean and well maintained feel, it’s also oceanfront which I like.
One thing that speaks volumes about Boston is it’s mentioned in the same sentence as NYC but its city proper population is 0.7M vs NYC’s 8.6M. Granted the greater Boston area grows to 4.9M vs greater NYC’s ~20M, but still.
I’ve heard it said f**k Philly, marry Boston. Guess I married crazy!
I go to Maine every single year at least once and spend time in Boston on the way up or back each time since I have some friends there. It’s a cool city. I think I just like my home right now and it seems like I’d have to drive a lot more (maybe I’m wrong here), which I am so happy to avoid. That is actually a pretty big limiting factor in the US. Right now, I barely drive at all. If I moved most places except NYC/SF in the States it I pretty much need to commute every day or work from home. It’s tradeoffs, man.
nice job. please assist how increase net worth 100k one year. thanks!
Isnt 100k networth increase is 2 good days of S&P for Ohai? Nerdy, gotta step it up
heh we all go about at our own pace! i am plenty happy where i am which is at the top 5%. and am pretty excited on where i’ll be. next year, i might crack 500k. very imp milestone.
I mean, technically you could teach yourself everything a PhD in Physics might know from Yale by self research. I’ve done a bunch of MOOCS and they are great, but personally I found that working in a joint MS/PhD program on major projects was far more advanced than a lot of the online courses. I wanted something that focused on the math side and I also feel that the program I’m in keeps me moving at a much faster pace than I would have gone on my own while working. It’s primarily a full time program and I’m one of the few doing it part time, so that has meant a lot of very late nights that I never would have done on my own to get up to speed at this pace. Also, I wanted something that I could point to and say, my skills are this amount, particularly since DS is a broad term and the industry is being overrun with applicants claiming one thing or another.
I do love Philly and you’re not wrong, Philly will always be a favorite of mine. You probably have to drive more in Boston, it just comes down to individual pros and cons.
Correctly call UFOs going mainstream: CHECK
I haven’t done any of his content, but based on the topic I’d guess like a 5ish. The problem is as you get more advanced you wind up doing three month pretty intensive courses on topics like deep learning and because its group based, some of the projects move in depth beyond what an individual might be assigned with. Additionally the grade driven deadlines and the fact that most students are studying full time as their only priority just add a level of competitiveness and rigor as well. If you actually go beyond the masters to PhD then research it jumps to the 10 level where you are going to the edge of the field. That said, nothing against MOOCs, I’ve used them and been thrilled in getting up to speed on different topics and they’re super efficient, nothing wrong with going that route.
Always thought either Phd or bust, always though Masters never go far enough, aslo, most coveted ds spots pretty much require Phd
I hate to act like Seth Rogan - but DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM I AM STONED

please advise
“Most coveted spots require PhD”
This is blatantly untrue, it may change going forward but for now that just isn’t the scenario
Agree, this is factually untrue, particularly in DS.
