If you have the cash - Canali
Brooks Bros is great if you want to look like a walking box and/or are 70 years old.
brooks brothers is pretty bad…maybe if you live in WI and/or +60 years old.
dude these are stupid expensive and they are so soft that after one season they are done. When you’re wearing $4k jacket and the ends of the sleeves are bit wearing off, you gotta get a new one because at that point it is equivalent to driving a 12 year old Ferrari which you bought for 90k.
I go with Theory, Ted Baker or one of the many smaller shops in Soho. Looks good price is bit high but only rivals to that of Boss. And less chance that my suit or shirt is the same as those of 50 other guys in the 6 train.
Nope, they have slim fit now. I’m on the tall/lean side and I have no trouble getting fitted properly.
Then again I am in Canada so they don’t carry as many parachute sizes for the local populace.
Edit. For reference, I have Canali, Burberry, Paul Smith, Prada et al. In my experience Canali is really excellent material fit, definitely my favourite out of all the suits I own. For daily wear and not to over dress, I think BB strikes a good price/quality balance as an acceptable conservative ‘beater suit’.
I have a Navy zegna suit. Paid 499 at Saks off 5th a couple weeks before x mas. MSRP was like 1100 I think.
One thing about the discount stores like SaksOff or Century21 is that the “MSRP reference price” are pure fantasy (for most brands)…
They say “75% off”… on a product that has never been sold at the MSRP… so it is hard to understand what your getting… you just have to know how to spot the real sale
i think jc penny tried your real sales strat. i think it panned out ok.
this is a good point and always wondered too. Obviously no one thought it was worth the MSRP price. Not to mention it takes minimum 2-3 years for any clothes to end up at SaksOff or Century 21. Just go with one of dozens of small shops in Soho. Can’t go wrong with them. Great fit, design, and material. Price is comparable to that of Boss and lowers your chance of seeing another dude wearing the same exact outfit
I know people in the luxury (think Prada/Ferragamo and above) retail business and asked them the same question. There are people who will buy them at MSRP. Obviously these people are extremely wealthy and will pay the premium for a) wearing the newest fashions, b) being unique for at least 2 seasons, c) because they can.
By the time it gets to folks like me and you, we probably don’t get the selection, sizing, range that was originally offered, which is why we get the discount. There’s some great value in these sales if you can wait, but value just doesn’t hold the same meaning to rich folks.
I know rawraw was joking but in all reality, there’s no shame in going to Men’s Wearhouse. Many of the people that work there know basics and can help you pair colors on tie/square, basic belt/shoe rules etc. You can spend $2,500-$3,000 and get a full week of clothes with accessories if the timing of sales is good. If you don’t know jack and don’t want to be bothered spending too much time learning, it’s a decent place to start. But finding a MW consultant who is patient and not trying to constantly upsell is key. You should go with a set objective (i.e., I need 3 suits in 3 basic colors like charcoal, navy and another neutral, I’d like 5 shirts, 2 belts, etc. to match your needs, etc.), which will make your experience a lot better. Contrary to popular belief, they carry an excellent selection of top labels, despite what the big-timers on this forum would probably say.
After that you can decide what works for you and do the Off 5th, etc. rat race diving through the bargain bins once you’ve got the basics covered.
Sweep, does Patrick Bateman need to weigh in on this?
Mens Warehouse is a ripoff… sure they have “top labels” but why shop there when the discount outlets may have the exact same model for half the price. The budget suits at MW is going to be something like a $399 polyester… I was in shock when I went in there for a wedding tuxedo rental and paid $350 for a 2 day rental for what should have been a $200 priced to own POS.

Not all the suits are polyester. There are many price ranges there. I can’t disagree with the rental being a ripoff but that’s another matter. My only argument is that for someone new to the suit game who doesn’t want to shop online because they don’t know how something will fit, it isn’t a terrible place to start.
I’m sure I failed a job interview because I was dressed sloppy and ever since looking sharp has been more important to me
Here is the SNL Jos A Bank parody video ROFL… one of the funniest Saturday Night Live clips ever

I ain’t bragging about MW. But trashing them and holding out Macy’s like a set of 50-pound testicles? Get serious.

I thought you lived in the Western World? My underwear and socks costs more than $3,000!
Simple.
Start with something you like and affordable, if no one compliments you on it, maybe it’s not for you.
Then spend a bit more money and go to stores with more knowledgable sales who would pick something suitable for you, wear them and see how people react to you.
Repeat until you get compliments.
Trust me, if you are wearing something smart, you will get noticed!
