Econ - feeling lost

Feeling kinda lost with Econ. Just did my 2nd pass and tried to answer EOCs. I’m basically just guessing on most of them.

I would usually watch the Elan video but the ccy xchange one is 6 hours long and then almost 3 hours for the 2nd reading. No video for the policy reading for some reason…

What strategy are you adopting for Econ. What helped get through this section? I’ve used Schweser notes so far. Should I read the CFAI text or watch 10 hours of videos? How do I conquer this section?

Hey @Clever - this is quite similar to my strategy - in terms of time, how much/what do you have left before you complete your second pass and move on to review/mocks?

Also, any videos you suggest skipping b/c they aren’t worth the time? I’m currently going through FRA, but thinking I might have to switch my strategy to just focus on the heavy weights given how long it’s taking and I still need to do a comprehensive review before I feel ready for a mock.

Lastly, are you just doing EOCs or did you make some progress with the FQ Item Sets? I think you started a thread on those earlier…?

A bit reassuring to see someone following a similar study plan!

Hey Fatso, I’m done with 2nd pass for the following: Equity, Derivs, FI, CF. I’m hoping to get AI, Quant, and PM squeezed into the next couple of weeks as they are small and I did first pass fairly recently (also I’ve already done EOCs for these). All these I’ve done mostly with Schweser and occasional videos for stuff I didn’t get (or I’ll just skip to the LOS that I don’t get, no point in watching a whole video for something I mostly understand). I’m making sure to make good notes on stuff that I think I’ll forget and which I feel is key to each section.

For FRA, I want to read the CFAI text for the 2nd Study session (Multinatonal, Pensions, etc), and do BBs and EOCs. I hate that section with a passion but want to nail it. I’m going to try to give myself 2 weeks for FRA in total.

Not much time left after that. I really wanted to hit QBank on everything for a 2-4 weeks like I did for L1 but I don’t think I’ll have time. It’ll have to be straight into mocks after that.

And no, I haven;t touched finquiz stuff I bought. Might try to make time for it but don’t see the point since I’ve got like 10 practice exams to go through which I’ll never have time for. Who knows man, just not enough time.

One thing I also did was to make a schedule of every day until exam time to partition the time. Really makes you realize how little time is left. I might not get Econ but I need to move on in the next couple of days rather than dwell on it.

I did the same thing - made a schedule for the next two months breaking my study sessions throughout the day to maximize study time and give me a sense of HOW much is still remaining, but you’re right man, there’s just not enough time.

Ahh, unlike you where it sounds like even your second pass is mostly reading and occasional video, mine is vice versa - mostly videos, but I might skip things like AI & PM and just do a quick re-read of the notes.

I agree though that no matter how much I read/watch videos, I really want to test myself w/q-bank before hitting the mocks - just hope I have time!

Good luck to both of us - hoping this is ALL worth it

@clever: For growth theories, I believe you really have no choice but to watch the Elan video and/or Elan notes if you want to understand it. The curriculum is HORRIBLE for this, and Schweser is very very brief and misses a lot of stuff.

For currency exchange rates, the Elan video is too long. It’s good if you can get through it because he goes through everything in detail, but I studied it primarily fom the Elan notes and it was good enough for me.

I don’t know what to do with the third econ reading. It’s such a load of crap really that I didn’t feel like investing any time into it.

Hi all,

For econ I used CFA text for my first pass. I found it quite useful especially for exchange rates and growth. Regulation is really not my forte but hoping to revise it in my second pass. I also did the EOCs which expose you to almost all sections.

I done these topics in my undergrad, it surely helps - so I am not sure whether the curriculum is adequate for someone who was never exposed to these topics.

Of course lectures video can help get hold of the mechanics of the topics - I am not a real fan of videos but if you have time I suggest you go through.

Planning to do my second pass from Schweser this weekend - will update you.

I am just finishing up Econ–my undergrad major by the way–i found that Schweser just sucked the big one on this section. Do the CFAI material and no short cuts for this.

Bump:

I just went through the eco questions and similar to CleverCFA I am totally not getting this. Any tips?

Worst subject angry

Remember, this is likely only going to be ONE item set. So know the main concepts, and if you can get 4/6, count that as a win and move on.

For me, I’m making sure I know the following:

Triangular Arbitrage and calculating cross rates.

Know conceptually what a carry trade is (how to set them up, when to get out, etc…)

Mundell Fleming (given capital flow assumption, effect of monetary/fiscal policy on currency)

Distinguish between neoclassical, classical, and endogenous growth theories.

Distinguish between the convergence theories.

Capital deepening and technology effect on growth given different assumptions.

I know that encompasses a lot of the curruculum for Econ, but after I’ve mastered these things, I’m focusing on more important topics. Not to mention, some of the derivatives section carries over (interest rate parity). Maybe I’m crazy, but fretting over Econ when it’s likely only 6 questions doesn’t seem prudent.

yeah, thanks!!! You’re right.

I have a feeling though that it’ll be 6 on tri-arb… I’ve read previously that CFA like testing the FX questions. I think aiming for 4/6 sounds realistic.

I’ll watch the vid tonight and try to make some more notes. I’ll concentrate on FRA and EI over the weekend!

3 will do for me

For Econ I read schweser and watched the schweser videos, and also watched the Elan videos. I thought schweser was good for the currency exchange stuff as they teach useful “tricks” to get through it. I did not think it was good for the rest of that reading (models for fiscal and monetary policy, etc.) and I did not think it was good for the next reading (cobb douglas, neoclassical growth, etc.).

I thought Elan video was good for the stuff above that I mentioned schweser was not good for. The problem as you mention are that the videos are really long. For instance he spends maybe an hour or hour and a half on the neoclassical model. He is not wrong to do that as it is difficult to understand, but from a cost/benefit analysis maybe there will be one question at most on the neoclassical model. If you have the time thought, they are worth it.

Don’t get too caught up in econ, out of all the subjects you get the least bang for your buck as it does not seem there would be more than one item set on the test.

Schwesser notes do a poor job in Econ, however, I can wholeheartedly recommend Schwesser videos here!

Just mark C for all econ questions. You’re bound to get at least one right.

Econ was d first material i read back in feb. i glanced at the quizzes and i cant remember a thing hwahahahha. As i only read the materials once (just finished first pass yday), i think i will just rely on 11th hour n quizzes n mocks for econ and hope my luck is good come June. Prefering to do second pass of other bigger items subjects

it is definitely not ideal, but am running out of time

Econ is definitely not my favorite either! I’d definitely recommend to learn to graph on p.517 as it makes a lot of sense to connect all the theories. As far as the rest of econ goes, I plan on practicing a bit to try remembering other formulas.
