Expensive purchases you reward yourself with

Out of pure luck, I started a new job and I’m really happy. I’m thinking of buying a relatively expensive (definition might vary) gift. What purchases have you guys made to celebrate something? I was thinking of a leather backpack/briefcase (Samsonite, Tumi, Mulberry?) Not really knowledgeable about other brands.

Me personally, I might get a bottle of liquor or champagne but usually not.

I bought myself a Benz. Big mistake. Rack up the 401k. Minimize your taxes. Grow your net worth. You will not find solace in material things. Though hot chicks will usually make you happier.

Damn, I forgot I was in the presence of BSDs. I had in mind a budget of CAD1,500-2,000 max. Maybe something leather that will last me for life.

My RRSP and TFSA are maxed already. And I have an unregistered account.

You should target around $500 USD max for those sorts of briefcases you mentioned.

Anyway, here are a few things

  1. A nice leather jacket ($500 to $1000)

  2. Tumi bags (you only need one bag or briefcase though) ($200 to $500)

  3. DSLR camera (although with all the accessories, this has easily gone $2000+, and you have to spend a lot of time taking pictures)

  4. Dinner at nice restaurant ($200-$500 per person)

  5. Vacation (plane tickets+ $???)

  6. S&P 500 index funds

You can also get all kinds of TV, sofa, or other furniture, but I usually think of those as household shared purchases.

I assume you’re a dude so get a tailor made suit. This has several benefits:

  1. It looks a lot sharper and refined than an off the rack suit + it lasts forever if you take care of it

  2. if you sit at your desk all day, tailor made pants wont feel tight and uncomfortable.

  3. Looking the part matters, like it or not.

  4. It gets dem ladies.

But this would still be my #1 choice.

Yea you should treat yourself! Personally I’d go with a used Rolex. It’ll at least appreciate in value. But I’ll need at least 8k for the standard submariner. In th2 2k price range I typically get a gaming laptop, but I’m a big gamer. I usually don’t reward myself, but I do shop a lot during Black Fridays or amazon day. A mini fridge. Bulbs that light on voice command. Voice command TVs. Anything that makes my life simpler, lazier or more comfortable.

  1. Gas powered turtleneck sweater
  2. Fur sink
  3. Electric dog polisher

Don’t get a backpack or briefcase, can get good ones without spending too much. Go for the vacation, go somewhere nice, see something new, recharge your batteries.

^thats so millennial. Experiences imo are just as lame. I prefer material shit over that. Though there are articles that have stated that experiences have made people happier than material stuff. Works for most people I guess but not me. Anyways anything that gets me closer to fire makes me happier. The bigger my net worth, the more confident I feel.

Invest in my forex fund.

I work at a start up so jeans and t-shirt every day. Can’t get more comfortable than that. The only reason I haven’t spent too much on clothes is because I have thick thighs and combined with the way I walk, the inner thighs rub together. I’ve always had holes there. Not sure if I want to spend $1,000+ on pants that will eventually rip.

I’m going to HK during Christmas to visit family.

Nah bro, it’s not milennial it is just science. Check out this article, might be continuing ed.

Nerdy got a boner after reading your description of pants issue. If you are coming to HK in December, that totally doesn’t count as a good vacation. For starters, get a refundable ticket. If you want to hear a very good, balanced story about the HK protests, check this out, really good, especially if you can understand canto. https://www.thisamericanlife.org/686/umbrellas-up

different strokes for different folks!

Every time I have a good workout and burn some calories, I reward myself with a chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, a couple pieces of buttered Texas toast, and a couple of Cokes to wash it down with. (Preferably the little glass bottles. Coke always tastes better out of the little glass bottles.)

I never liked any phyiscal gifts, but i am all for splurging on services. Taking Uber for convineicne, upgrading to 5 star hotels, ect ect
