From Boutique to Bulge Bracket ibank

It appears that the ability to flow down stream (Bulge Bracket to Boutique) is an easier path. My question is whether flowing the other way possible? My conventional wisdom tells me that if you rise to VP level at a Boutique you have a decent chance to squeeze into a Bulge Bracket working in similar capacity. However, if you are bottom of the totem pole at a Boutique IBank (analyst or associate), your chance of breaking into a Bulge Bracket firm is nonexistant. How far am I from the truth?

I think that seems about right. I think low many on the totem pole at a BB has a better chance at getting a position one step up at a boutique, vs. the other way around. This is another question where having polls on this forum would be useful.

I’d imagine if you were to compare a junior analyst in a boutique versus one fresh out of university, the bulge would prefer the junior analyst since they have some more experience. You’d have to start from the bottom again, but I think it’s still doable to change from boutique to bulge

I know a guy from a small firm that is now at JP in the same role. He joined as a senior assoicate. He is only guy I know who made the jump.

How > far am I from the truth? from my experience in ER, moving from a smaller shop to a BB is not that difficult at the lower (analyst/associate) level. you might not get full credit for your years of experience, but the big shops will look at you because you have direct experience (especially if it’s in a related sector). for a senior analyst with coverage it’s much more difficult to make big jumps. BBs mostly steal from each other or promote from within. hiring from shop like jefferies would be very conceivable, but you’re not going to see a senior analyst lateral from the lower end boutiques.

How variant are the bulge bracket banking and research comps (in percentage terms, all in) as compared to boutiques. Is there an industry standard premium at the bulge bracket.

“How variant are the bulge bracket banking and research comps (in percentage terms, all in) as compared to boutiques. Is there an industry standard premium at the bulge bracket.” You would have to compare boutique banks and bulge brackets banks in New York City to do a fair comparison.

Based on my personal experience working in M&A, such kind of a move is possible - that’s what I did at least. With full credit for the years of experience, too. CFA charter is well regarded, though, so being a charterholder of course helped.
