Getting a job in NYC (while living on the west coast)

What’s the best way to go about such a job search, preferably without moving there beforehand? Not surprisingly, I’ve had limited luck with online applications.

Very difficult especially if you’re still early on in your career. You’ll need to spend some time living in NYC and meeting face to face with potential employers. Might have to carve out a week of “vacation” time after you’ve lined up a bunch of meetings ahead of time. There are too many unemployed and under-employed folks in NYC that will fight tooth and nail and you need to bring something different to the table (i.e. a personal connection / introduction can go a long way; the rest is just having that certain “spark” that gets a potential employer excited about you)

Thanks. Any tips on how to go about setting up meetings with employers? As you know, the LA finance market is pretty small and salaries are higher in NYC, and plus, that’s where I want to be.

Been trying to get back to NYC for 6 months after moving to Boston post college. Miserable process of interviews and second/third rounds. Waiting to hear back now. Have made 6 trips there on a days notice. Be ready to move fast if something pops up.

It’s nearly impossible to get in NYC firms without being there. I would know.

As Numi said, the best thing possible is a personal connection. Honestly, no matter how good you are that is not what is going to get you the job. There are too many “good” people and too many underemployed willing to do anything for a job… maybe even for free.

Well that sucks.

I have an even better post…
