Sikhs are an easy target, a hardworking, enterprising people with a proud tradition of military service. They are not harming anybody by wearing turbans and beards (the universal healthcare argument is pretty weak given how small of a community this is). Despite that Canada is a fertile ground for Islamists, which Canada seems to have no problem tolerating, I guess it’s no surprise to see people whining about Sikhs.
its a slippery slope because people can make up religions and say they need to do x, or carry x, or need x exemption because it is part of their religion. if a follower of JoeBlowShottyism says he needs to carry a 12 gauge shotty around town, then we have to let him right? why would we treat JoeBlowShottyism any differently than Sikhism or Christianity.
if we say Sikhism is better than JoeBlowShottyism, then we will begin to rate religions based on merit. as a Christian society with Christian founded laws, run mostly by people who have Christian founded morals and viewpoints, we will eventually see Christianity as better than everything else, which is not appropriate in a multicultural and mutireligion society. we cannot make exceptions that defy logic as it will beign to erode who we are, which is a collective which must make sacrifice for the greater good.
^ I’m much more worried about the Islamists than the guys running every liquor store and pizza shop. While it may be inappropriate to racially stereotype, I don’t think I’ve met people so hard working and with so much small business sense and hustle than Sikhs.
So why should they be exempt from laws that don’t infringe on their human rights? Riding a motorcycle isn’t a human right.
Its a slippery slope to provide exemptions to laws that don’t infringe on human rights. I don’t think any religion should get exemptions that aren’t in violation of human rights.
I’ll go on a rant about Christians too if you want?
and yes we in Canada have a problem with Muslim extremists. Although the country itself isn’t a fertile ground for them. It’s all the ones with Canadian passports living abroad.
okay. an unloaded shotty that isn’t for shooting is what JoeBlowShottyism says is mandatory in order to follow JoeBlowShottyism. similar to a “ceremonial” knife that isn’t for stabbing. i can think up 1 million exemptions that shouldn’t be exempted but will be exempted if we let 1 illogical exemption pass. exemption!
agreed. the roadway is a social asset and thus rules must be made for people who wish to use that asset. it’s not like we’re forcing them to wear a helmet in their home or on their private property.
This post is pretty illegible, so I’d like for you to simply tell me how wearing a turban is a danger to public safety. Let me know when you’ve figured it out, and I’ll be happy to debate this with you.
His post makes perfect sense. Just because a religion says you can do something, doesn’t mean it’s okay to do. Wearing a turban is not the issue. Not wearing a helmet on a motorcycle is. If you’re on private property, go right ahead. I’m not against Sikhs and this has nothing to do with how hardworking they are, but if you’re on PUBLIC roads, then the rules should apply to everyone
