This might be a silly question but I’ve never seen it asked on here before and I have an interview coming up with a private wealth management firm. I was just wondering what, if any, is the different between hedge funds (asset management) and private wealth management. I’m assuming Asset Management might require higher capital requirements, must be an accredited investor, and/or can service institutions. And PWM is more retail and individual investors? If you work for a PWM firm are you just a gloried financial advisor who also does research on equities? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I know of some PWM people that are now among the richest people on the planet… after taking their clients with them to their new HF…

Tell me how you really feel…
Well…HF is really a catch all term for private investment partnerships that are run by a general partner firm, and range a wide variety of asset classes and styles. I suppose it can overlap with PWM as RIAs may run their own HFs I believe…

Now, within a PWM shop there are different roles. Normally you’ll have the relationship guys and the portfolio managers. Being a PM at a PWM shop isn’t a bad gig. Decent money and about as low stress as being a PM gets.
