An MD is coming to campus tomorrow for some Q&A. Anyone have some good insight? I’m familiar with the bank, but not all to familiar with any recent deals or breaking news. Thanks.
Dude he’s coming for Q&A. Do you think you’re going to glean some tidbit off the internet which you will then use to wow him with an unbelievably pointed, insightful and probing question wherein he will have no choice but to offer you a job on the spot? I suggests the googles.
they’re just like the biggest investment bank headquartered in the west coast… i know of couple of ppl who started there: one now at a PE shop in west la, and the other working for a hedge fund… anyways, a good opportunity at least to network or hone in your interviewing/marketing skills. good luck quantjock
Thanks. I’m not anywhere near an expert in the ib space. I’m researching them this evening and want something more than to be familiar with the ‘about us’ section of the website.
Just be yourself and ask insightful questions about careers in investment banking or advisory. Most people try too hard at these information sessions; your way to make an impression is NOT by trying to come across as someone that knows more about their field than they do, but rather someone that is curious, energetic, likable, and determined to make a career in banking. You really shouldn’t drive yourself nuts about studying up in advance of an information session, because 99% of your attempts to sound “smart” and “informed” about what they do will come across as too rehearsed or forced. However, the few things you should know about it is (1) it’s a leading bank in the middle market, and probably the most prestigious in my view; (2) they have one of the best restructuring practices of all the investment banks; (3) people definitely work hard there, but there is a real emphasis on teamwork and your opportunities following a job at HLHZ will be excellent. Good luck…just be yourself.
They ae excellent at restructuring and do very well representing bond steering committees on high profile deals.
the majority of students will not ask questions, so by asking good questions you will stand out. save a couple of good ones for after his talk, so you can goto him and speak to him personally. you will have asked one or two questions questions before everyone will start crowding around him as well, so say, “i went back to school to pursue a career in your industry and would love some more insights by someone as successful as you, do you mind if i call you or email you with some more questions?” he will not mind, you will obtain a business card. follow up and try see him in person for an informational interview. i have from career service some pretty good questions, lemme know if youre interested. After the meeting remember to tell him you will update him on your process so you have an excuse to email him and ask for referrals. Try meet with the referrals and start spreading your name around. in school, your number 1 priority is networking. remember to ask for referrals.
HLHZ treats their pre-MBAs like slaves. I have several friends who work there right now in D.C, ATL, and London. True sweatshops. The pay is good but most of the guys I know are working 100+ hour weeks the majority of the time and that’s out of NYC which isn’t that common. I have no idea what the post-MBA experience is like there.
Read the transactions sheet. My friend had an interview with an MD at a boutique IB in ATL and he started firing off questions about the deal sheet. The MD got REALLY nervous and was like “well…uhh…those transactions weren’t closed here, those where closed when I was with XYZ bank…” It’s probably different for HL because they are a much bigger, better known bank.
My friend worked in their M&A group in NYC for a few years. They seem more laid back than other M&A shops from the hours that he was working.
