How and when to reach back out?

I’m graduating from MBA school this May and I interviewed at this value oriented hedge fund about 2 years ago (before I went back to school). I think the hiring manager liked me but he mentioned that I was too green as I came from a completely different industry. I feel much more prepared now after passing CFA levels and studying Finance in school. Is it too early to reach out and what should I say? My date of availability is May.

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Might as well inquire and include what has changed

Yeah I definitely say go for it, just be prepared with your list of reasons/reasoning in general as to how you are now in a position to add real value to their operation compared to before when you were a little green.

Just write and say that you were impressed by the manager and after your studies (and any other experiences you’ve had) you have an even better appreciation for what fund X has been able to accomplish. Let them know that you’ve been thinking about them and would like to talk to them about what’s been happening over the last two years and see if they have recommendations on your career.

i.e. ask for an informational interview. If they liked you and have a space for you, then they’ll tell you about it. If not, then you ask them for suggestions and recommended contacts.

Their connections may be as vauable to you as the opportunity for a position.

Good posts ITT. I’d reach out ASAP. I see no need to wait.

Should I attach my resume in the initial email?

I’m not sure whether he will remember me at all. I was just one of many interviewees he has probably met over the years. Is an informational interview still the way to go? I will be emailing him soon

Shooting a resume seems a bit strong. Call /Email for an informational interview over a coffee. Learn about what’s changed with their firm and what theyre doing. If you make it all about you, its bound to fail. Try to show that you’re not “green” anymore through conversation not just hitting them with MBA, B, C, D…

Be confident, smile, and kill it. good luck.

Agree^. I would not attache resume yet either

Sending a resume would be a good idea, methinks. e.g. “I’m not green anymore, as you can see. Let’s grab a coffee” etc

I think reaching out would be a great idea, especially as you felt you made a good impression. Actually I landed an offer doing something similar to what you are contemplating.

You can include a resume, just say why it’s included “I’ve attached an updated resume so you can see what’s happened since we last spoke.” Or something like that.

Try reaching around too.
