When recruiting into finance, or any other career, people often tell you to network. It’s not always so clear what that means. This article sheds a little light on it. I would be really interested to hear if other folks have had success networking into high finance. Let me know!

One year before moving to the UK, I had begun networking with a former director of research at Citi. Got the conversation rolling without mentioning my intention of moving to the UK. When I finally moved, I was in touch with him/her again to inform I was in town. The rest is history.
My strategy - get comments made in the press by the person with whom you want to network. Comments in research reports written by this person are also fine. Align your views to match these comments and let the person know you’re in agreement with their perspectives (you don’t want to be argumentative initially). Continue to build the rapport until you’re asked if interested in an open role or to send in your CV. This was what happened in my case.
This technique works when looking to network into research roles.
