How hard is it to get long only position?

When i was not in sell side equity research, i thought that every1 wanted hedge fund job but i always preferred the long only AM career because of my own personality. Now it seems that long only AM is like the hardest job to get on the Street?

Am i wrong in my perception? Is it even realistic to try?
