How long will it take to read through the Level 3 material?

Hello Guys,

So that I may plan ahead and have about 3 - 4 months of just doing practice problems, roughly how long would you say it should take your average candidate to get through the Level 3 Schweser material?

Let’s assume I would be on a solid study track from the get-go, clocking in 5 - 6 days of study time per week with about 3 hours each session.

Thank you in advance, and much appreciated!

You need at least 4 months (18-20 weeks) from official CFAI to go over the curriculum… except for Ethics and GIPS. and 5 months for All (15-18 hours/week)

Maybe you will finish earlier, later it depends on you. I think 2 months of practice is enough and maybe extra month for review (2nd round reading)… So if you plan ahead then you should start studying next month or latest in November.

because it takes so long to read through the entire materails … you’ll likely to forget what you stuided in S2, when you say go to S8 or S9. Keep that you mind - you’ll likely need to review the materail 2 or 3 times. Obviously each pass, it’ll get shorter. I used Sch. notes, and took my own notes. Read Sch. about 3 times … although last one was really fast reading (except Etichis and GIPS). And then used my compact notes to review further.

Secret Sauce for L3 it not worth the read IMO.

it took me three months for the CFAI materials, and then two months for Kaplan Schweser books. I started in september, by january I was into Qbank and EOC (200 questions a day) March April May TEST AFTER TEST AFTER TEST ( I may have over done it but better safe than sorry)

How long is a piece of string?

i think for L3, the formulas/math are not there as much; you can pretty much have a thorough reading going through the regular Sschweser notes. Not really necessary to make it even more compact, and go over the secret sauce.

I still found that reading Schweser notes was the way to go for me. I was already used to it from L1 & L2. CFA original books are just too verbose, and takes like 10 pages to explain somethign that may be otherwise a 1 page read. I’m not that fast of a reader, so that makes Schweser notes perfect fit for me. That plus, some EOC questions/blue box stuff from CFA to fill in any gaps.

IMO: If you start now, read the CFAI books! It’s the last level; reading only prep provider books and failing would be more time consuming than reading the CFAI books (+ prep providers).

Just read CFAI, start now and give yourself 3 months. Finish by Christmas, take a week off through New Years, then start reading Schweser and it will take you 1/2 the time it would have if you had started with it. Then do 8 - 10 mock exams (previous CFAI Exams 2011-2015, 6 from Schweser and all the EOC/Blue Boxes in CFAI). While you’re reading Schweser put all of the bullet point’s on note cards and carry a handful everywhere you go. Then you will get the Charter in August.
