How much do you spend for a haircut?

According to my critics, two dollars.

Tipping should be on some kind of a sliding scale. I think the stylist who spends time only on you as opposed to a waiter who only spends 1/10 of his Time deserves more of a tip if they do a good job. And how does a waiter deserve 20% if they spent so little time on you anyway but you just happen to order expensive things. If you ordered a plate of caviar for example that is a hundred bucks , they deserve 20 bucks for bringing you that 1 plate?

$30 and I’m gradually learning how to tip. 1st time I gave a few dollars and the guy looked at me like I’d just shat on his shoes.

I don’t know if this is common but the thing I find funny is how people really own their haircutting experience (to use a wanky term) and give really vivid descriptions of what they want and constant feedback including lines like “Can you make the sides a bit choppier”.

I’m culturally programmed to sit down, not move an inch, talk about the weather, then holidays for the year and then when they hold up the mirror and ask if it’s ok, to say “perfect” even if they’ve accidentally given you frosted tips aka “An Itera”

Haha I am like this too. Or at least used to be with an old barber who would miss spots or not really do what I was asking and be like “yeah… looks great!” Then leave and wonder why the hell I didn’t say anything.

Agreed, the tipping “etiquette” in bars and restaurants is rediculous. I’ve researched it online and some of the ones on the receiving end are so entitled. I’ve never ordered a bottle of really expensive wine, but I don’t see myself ever paying more than $20 to someone for walking a bottle to my table, removing a cork, and pouring a couple glasses… even that is generous. i could that when I was 10. Their prevailing thinking is, if you’re too cheap to tip, stay home and drink… Fine by me.

I only tip by rounding up the bill. If the bill is a nice round number then tough luck, no tip. It costs me €10 for a haircut, how am I supposed to tip? The next smallest available banknote is €5 and that would make a 50% tip. On the other hand if I offer a €2 coin that would definitely insult the guy.

18 for the cut, 5 for the tip.

Was a place in queens when I lived there that was an old school barber shop $13 bucks and you got your ears and neck done with hot foam and a straight razor. Was one of the best cuts ever and I still try to make my way out there if I have time (so after June 4th)

$21 with $10 tip in downtown boston ($20 tip around Christmas). I agree barber deserves more tip than a waiter. At restaurants, I always calc 15% on the pre-tax amount and round up to the nearest 0.50 or 0.00. F*** those places that suggest gratuity starting at 18% then 20% then 25%. The suggestions used to start at 15%. Also, I believe delivery people deserve more tips than waiters.

My concern wasn’t that he’d make a mistake, but something someone having a blade that close to my knife makes me uncomfortable. From a “what if they just killed me” perspective.

$30 including tip. She has huge breasts and they rub against me. She’s also ok at cutting hair.

I do miss the straight-edge for the back of the neck, particularly the warm shaving cream. Cutting my hair is very simple though (#2 clippers for the back and sides, scissors on the top to about a #4 clipper), so hard to justify the expense or time of anything other than Great Clips. I check in online and never have to wait more than 2-3 minutes. Hair is done less than 10 minutes after I sit down, so in and out in less than 15 minutes.

free. i just line myself and the kids up and let the buzzer do the work.

i am contemplating going to a barber for some “me time” though. i would never pay more than CAD$20 for a cut but i’m in a smaller city.

I spend about $18 plus $5 tip. The girl who cuts my hair is really cute and they have a special man cave (own sitting area, TV for sports) so its pretty good.

I also pay nada for a haircut. Usually, I do it myself every 4 weeks or so

Mike79 is that in Toronto? I’m looking for a new place.

I am a DIYer, but I used to frequent a place that cost around 35$ all in. A bit on the higher side but the 10min head massage (not the happy ending one) was worth it.

Nope, I’m north of the big smoke.

Apparently there is another place that serves you beer while getting a cut (but there prices are higher). The current place I use will make you a coffee or tea or whatever.

My cut just went up from $16 to $17. I leave a $3-$4 tip based on the quality

I’m surprised you tip. Think about the boost in savings rate you’d gain by not tipping at all

$60 but the guy comes to my place

Believe me, i have thought about it. But being a cheap person has led me to feel very insecure about discretionary tipping. I am so aware of my cheapness that I make sure I give a fair tip and dont stiff anyone
