I cheated on the CFA exam and got banned permanently

Well, time is limited and fluid. For everybody that took a stand and made a difference, there are many that just ended up on the shoulder of the highway. I agree that individual sacrifice can and has changed the system, the World, whatever. But the risk is large on an individual basis. I took a stand for what is right and fair once. Cost me a highly sought, well paid internship. My life turned out okay, but who knows where I would have ended up if I would have just kept my mouth shut. And the sad part is that I didn’t change anything.

Ethics is a major focus of the CFA – so a lifetime ban is not shocking. I also support the ban.

The majority of CFA candidates that I’ve know used pirated study materials. If ethics was really a strict requirement, we’d barely have any CFA charterholders at all.

I only cheated once. In junior year of undergrad, I allowed a friend to copy off of me during a final exam so he wouldn’t fail and get kicked off the baseball team.

In some cultures if you refuse helping your friends in this way (letting them copy off you, or even whisper a few things to help them solve their own questions) qualifies cruelty and not honesty.

I always liked the (for me) american style of exam behaviour where you genuinely are not allowed to “help” the others, the rules are straightforward, the exam questions are from the material you had access to and not only the “selected ones” who can afford extra tuition.

Only the similarity analysis cases are real disturbing. I don’t quite understand how these work. (But I don’t want to get to know it by being victim of it so I don’t mind if I die w/o understanding similarity analysis cases I just wonder sometimes).

And I once told my boss, in front of his boss and his lieutenant, that I couldn’t recall a time when he had given me competent technical direction on a project.

I don’t dwell on where I would have ended up had I said anything different.

I also had a quite a similar experience. Learned the “lesson” the hard way but consider myself lucky that I learned it early on in life. Life ain’t fair and it’s never going to be. It feels a lot better to be ahead of the curve rather than being behind it. Now, I do know my limitations and know where I need to stop. But I will always exploit the system given the opportunity.

If this was implemented seriously, 90% of South Asian candidates would be straight out disqualified.

^ Nothing is scummier than stealing people’s work. Seriously pisses me off beyond belief. Disgusting.

A wiseman once said “if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying and it’s only cheating if you get caught”. Ask Bill Bellicheck today if it was worth cheating during the 2002 SB. He has a SB ring while the Rams have nothing. Well worth losing a few draft picks and a fine.

Actually, spygate went on for several years andincluded the 3 super bowl victories.

Oh shit, the “magician guy”(some friendly young lady originally used the reference I believe) will not be happy with you.

“Why join the navy if you can be a pirate” Steve Jobs

most of rich companies and rich ppl commit loads of unethical practices. Some turn into the ethical side only when they reach a certain stature. They start the charity spree after a long period of screwing up markets and middle classes.

They’re sick and we feed them.

Better to be the one giving charity than the one who is receiving it.

To each his own.

So I guess to sum it all up…

Cheating is bad when you get caught (a la the Patriots in 2007).

But when you don’t get caught, it’s okay (a la the Patriots in 2002).

did the TS ever post again after starting the thread?

sounds like BS

I think cheating sucks. My point is trying to eradicate the “cheating” can backfire and the consequences should be considered on an individual basis before taking a stand. The only reason i have clients is that they are confident i won’t work them over. I think they’re right.

If someone offered me a significant amount of money to poison the horse of the “magician guy” the night before a big race, I would do it. And I would sleep well at night.

…at least until the magician guy sends over a warhead to take you out. You can’t be too careful with warhead designing magicians who know where you post…

Yeah pissing off a warhead designer is not advised.
