anybody have any good recommendations on textbooks/books on analysis of different industries? i got the AIMR industry analysis series and found it a bit useful but was looking for a greater understanding of various industries with a specific focus on valuation. I’m also aware that many on here work in research where you guys create industry primers and industry overviews. i’m looking to get my hands on that too and if we can strike a deal, that will be great. thx.
I asked this question about a year ago. The best answer (other than just bundling together some sell-side industry primers) was this: The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing: Morningstar’s Guide to Building Wealth and Winning in the Market (Paperback) http://www.amazon.com/Five-Rules-Successful-Stock-Investing/dp/0471686174 The second half of the book goes through sector by sector on industries in the sector, and what are some of the drivers behind them. It’s ok, and helpful for someone starting from scratch, but you do end up closing the book hoping you would walk away with a little more depth. I would actually like to go put together a book like this on something like sector rotation strategies and macro analysis of sectors/industries, but it’s a huge project and I still gots to find ways to pay the rent while I’m writing it.
bchad…i got Canadian Securities Analysis Vol 1 by Joe Kan as well. its a pretty good introduction but just a bit dated (10 years). thinking of getting Volume 2 but it seems like nobody has ever even read it and was not sure if it is as good as the first volume. nobody seems to have read this one, but its a textbook type of format where you got some analyst writing on the each sector from a Canadian perspective. would you care to share some of the sellside primers that you got? company specific research i can get a lot easier, but i’m looking for industry 101 type of essays and reports. i don’t get too much sellside stuff but we can trade definitely. i’m interested in all sectors with maybe the exception of Pharma/Technology as i really don’t think i have the background to understand those two big industries.
There is a thread somewhere from a while back (what bchadwick is talking about i think) discussing this… might want to dig that up to see if there is any good info. I know that S&P industry reports serve as pretty good primers… email me (jperlin at gmail) and ill send you one to check out.
thx J Rad, sent you an email.
stop holding out you guys. stop hoarding all of these reports and share. we need more research reports to get the economy going.
Frank: Got your email - I will send you some stuff tonight.
Turkish, Bchad, ValueAddict etc. i know you guys got reports. you guys work in the research arena. why you holding out? stop being so selfish. its better to give then receive. I’m waiting.
what reports do you want?
industry primers and industry overviews. i’m new to say the “oil and gas” industry. want to know the basics of the industry wtih regards to the players, their valuation, techniques in analysis and certain important factors in the field. i know they exist cause i “copped” a copy of a report called “online brokerage 101”. it gave me a great first hand understanding of the industry. give it up Turkish. its bad enough you didn’t help me get a job like 2 years ago, but can I at least get a handout? *stick hands out*
Now I have no idea what you mean. I thought you meant, issued research reports. I’ve never seen a primer on the oil and gas industry. I’ll ask around later today…but there’s nothing currently in my email like that. Sorry about not helping you get a job, at the time you were looking for ibanking…having started, and still residing on the buyside…my help was limited.
i can send you the report i got. its really good. buyside sounds good and ideal. would you be able to give me a lift?
I doubt it, I know for one we have a hiring freeze on the go. I think as soon as that’s gone we’ll be adding quite a few bodies. What are you trying to do now?
Turkish, i’ll be happy to tell you over email. please provide.
Turkish, ideally, spending 90% of the time researching companies and industries looking for juicy deals. business analysis.
“ideally, spending 90% of the time researching companies and industries looking for juicy deals. business analysis.” That sounds like a great gig. Your tracking error will be quite high, seems like you’ll have to wait for hedge funds to start hiring again.
damm Turkish!!! you did it to me again.
honestly though, i think getting into the buyside would be difficult. i think sellside associate is befitting. so, get on the horns and lets get this truck moving.
Well, I don’t know. A small cap manager perhaps? I mean, researching companies looking for juicy deals, I wish that is what went on around these parts. Ever wonder why fund managers can’t beat the S&P 500? 'Cause they’re (we’re) sheep… It only sounds fun over here.
Frank, what is your email?
