Industry Terms You Can't Stand

I said this tonight at a CFA networking event…lol

Power lunch

Hitting the bid

Power lunch…used to mean something different what it is nowadays…just don’t order a wine bottle as the payer can’t bill it to the company. Thanks U. S and A!

My company calls these meetings “Town Halls” and I don’t think i’ve ever made it more than 1 slide into it before tuning out.

saw a recent interview with ray dalio referencing the market cycle at the 7th inning. haha

“You’re fired”

Like, wtf does that mean? I can’t stand that one.

because the time to buy is when there is blood in the streets

sell when everything is great and you’re near the end of the cycle:

unemployment is at its 18 year low at 3.9%, the peak was 10.8% in 1982. (it hit 10% in 2010)

asset prices are high! Dow went from 7.2k in 2009 to 26.5k right now.

I check out whenever someone starts with,

  1. On the one hand… – you know this guy will take no position, only restate the obvious, and just waste your time…

  2. Constructive – as in, I am constructive on equity prices here…it means nothing, and is designed to be vague enough to be denied later when your non-call was wrong.

  3. “Look” or “well”… – this means I am going to throw up a strawman or mischaracterize what you said just so I can disagree with you no matter what, even if you only stated an opinion that the Pacific Ocean has interesting fish than the Atlantic.

+1 on town halls… still waiting for a town hall meeting where the ceo announces taxes going up or some roads need fixing.

Completely agree on “constructive.” Used by milquetoasts everywhere.

Another annoying one…”do the math,” when in fact, no math is involved.

I was in a meeting this week and someone said, with a straight face, “we need to get the project team to open the kimono”

jesus wept

  1. If you aint cheatin, you aint tryin

  2. I got deep pockets, but alligator arms

lol wow! thats funny. i need to try that!

Lol, “Another annoying one…”do the math,” when in fact, no math is involved.” All the indian bros from IIT on this board or ex management consultants pay attention, this is referring to you.

Lets see if we can get this deal to pencil out

Just heard this gem

“Wanted to circle back and make sure I’ve got my compass pointed in the right direction on this. …”

Variation of this, when people talk about making sure the stars are aligned on whatever

we screwed the pooch here! may peta fogive u

Boil this down for me fellas
