Interview horror stories at Goldman

^^^ And before someone asks: no, that is not MY story.

what’s the position? This can’t be true. Otherwise, they have a big HR problem. Imagine, you have msc finance + cfa and some guy is asking fixed income questions. This is just totally ridiculous.

“so where do you think the market is going?” This is the most difficult, as anything you say will be debatable. It also tends to show whether you’re technical or fundamental, opinionated or agreeable, following latest events or not, etc. Solution: be prepared, and decide your position early on.

down the tubes. lol

Maybe she just got a confrontational interview. I’ve had those before. I’m on the buy-side, but when I was in undergrad I had some interviews like that with sell-side firms. One time, two former football players interviewed me at once. They were completely obnoxious and asked me questions that I could have tried to BS my way through, but didn’t. Afterward, they told me how well I had done simply for not trying to act like I knew things I didn’t know. They asked me if I read the Wall Street Journal and I said, “Sometimes.” Then they asked me what that morning’s headline had been in section C. I had no idea. They said, “I thought you said you read the WSJ,” and I said, “No, I said I sometimes read it. I don’t have a subscription and I didn’t read it this morning.” Then they started making fun of earlier interviewees in my interview and some of the pompous things they said and how these guys undermined them. I decided it probably wasn’t the right environment for me and did not elect to fly out to NYC for another round.

I have interviewed with GS a bunch of times and they were some of the nicest people I have even met at interviews.

Somebody posted how I can get free Citi research online (and I thank them). Can somebody post a link or a password for free Goldman research? Seems like there are enough Goldman people chiming in on this thread that it shouldn’t be so hard.

Haven’t you read her name?

Two years ago I interviewed for AmSouth’s now Regions’s commercial banking program, just a measley regional bank and I had an interviewer start dropping his pen on his desk and saying “mm-hmm mm-hmmm” in a distinctively mocking tone. I guess it is kind of an ego boost to make loans to paper towel manufacturers in Huntsville, Alabama.

The most obnoxious interviewer I’ve ever had was for investment banking at Wachovia Securities (figures that a banker from Watch-ovah-ya has a chip on his shoulder). Some things I remember include his asking me why I wanted to do investment banking, and then I went through my whole 1-minute spiel…and afterwards he’s like, “That’s great. Did you memorize that? Why don’t you tell me something like you actually mean it?” Of course, I responded with something like, “Well, I’ve had a lot of time to think about this and I’m certain that these are the reasons why I want to do banking.” Of course, what I really wanted to say was something to the effect of, “Well, obviously I meant what I said, and of course I remembered it – after going through a dozen interviews and landing banking offers at several banks that are better than yours, you should know that I have my sh*t together. Who are you anyway?” Afterwards, he was asking me about some of my extracurricular interests (sports, music, business organizations, etc.) and past job experiences, and how they might relate to investment banking, and I go through the motions of explaining it to him. He replies, “Well, no, I don’t think that stuff is related to banking at all. None of that is going to help you.” Of course, at that point, I wanted to punch the guy in the face, but ended up just letting him know that he’s entitled to his opinion and that if he’s not interested in discussing my candidacy, we should just end the interview now. I later complained to my career center and they got in touch with Wachovia’s HR, who later got back to me about how badly they felt about things. They asked me if I wanted to fly to North Carolina to attend their final rounds, but at that point I wasn’t interested in dealing with them anymore and that I had moved on to “better opportunities.”

I heard recently that they had an important role in the Visa IPO… Don’t really know where they stand overall though.

Yep, there are lots of major jacka$$e$ in this industry. Always has, always will be. Just can’t take things personal. To quote Hyman Roth from Godfather II, “This is the business we’ve chosen.”

I have to say that I’m guessing I would become highly jaded after interviewing dozens or more hopeful college seniors. I’d probably want to shoot myself after hearing for the 3204750938457th time how someone’s time at band camp or as pledge chair for XYZ fraternity uniquely prepared them for an IB position. “So, I see here that you organized your campus’ “Save the Whales” campaign and even participated in intramural ruasdglahzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…”

right, but i think experience as a college athlete at a D-I school is very different from that stuff you mentioned, and probably something my interviewer couldn’t appreciate based on chip on shoulder/lack of confidence/general idiocy/etc

I wasn’t referring to you, specifically, numi. Just thinking that some of these folks probably get jaded and start looking at the candidates as puffed-up little punks who have no clue how the world works. You’re right about D-I experience - normally folks on the Street love college athletes.
