IWC Portuguese, JLC Master, or Blancpain Villeret

Thanks. I read a news story today actually, where the Patek Phillipe CEO commented on this watch. He said that his company doesn’t compete with “cheap” competition like that. What a douche.

This thread made me sad.

Tag’s been on a slide for a long time. Technically he’s not wrong - Patek’s doesnt’ really have a real competitor. you might argue AP or VC, but I know which one of the three I’d choose.

Anyone can make a tourbillon, and many other brands have, I think the Journo was just trying to get a soundbyte by asking the PP CEO. They are at least two brackets apart so this question was irrelevant.

how is your watch shopping going? have you checked out Mont Blanc?

I am more just casually looking - this could quickly become a very expensive hobby. However, maybe I will give into impulse at some point. I kind of like the idea of Mont Blanc sort of products. There is probably some value there relative to quality, since they don’t yet have the cult following of certain other brands. But who knows, maybe these will become collectors items in the future.

I know you have a collection of divers already but a watch I’m sorta eyeing as the Tudor Blackbay (red and black combo) as a fun watch somewhere down the line. I believe its under your max price, has the pedigree, movement-to-price value, and looks a stunner.

Like I said, at this price point it’s pretty hard to get a classy dress watch, hence why everyone on the street is wearing Omegas and Rolexes.

Ohai – what’s your thoughts on Longines?

anyone a fan of ingresoll or too cheap?

Longines? I have no personal experience with them, although it is a pretty famous brand. I think their issue is that they have no signature distinctive model, so they are anonymous to most people. I say judge the specific watch though, not the brand. So maybe there is some model that I would really like but just don’t know about.

Ingresoll: I’ve never heard of it. I think that watch is a mess though. The dial is too busy, the colors don’t match, and the maker seems to just have tried to put in as many complications as possible without considering the final result. Based on the zoomed in picture, the finishing and detailing do not seem to be on par with other watches that cost $5k. There are visible flaws in the paint and stenciling, and the details are not as sharp or as finely machined as those in other luxury watches. Even if it is a bargain to get those complications at this price, I would rather pay for fewer features but flawless execution. For example, for the same price, you can get a Tudor something (as someone mentioned), which has the same machining quality as Rolex.

damn i need to step up my watch game

good god. moonphase with tourbillon with power reserve. kitschy as fuck. horrible detailing and font.

Longines has a good name but they’ve fallen behind since the post-Quartz recovery. They do have a few nice pieces but nothing signature anymore. Ohai check out Zenith El Primero.

No. Don’t they make air compressors?

How about this bad boy: http://www.jomashop.com/patek-philippe-watch-5130j.html

This is where I get lost with fancy watches, it just gets ridiculous really. Just a way to extract large amounts of money from rich people that want people to know how rich they are.

^that looks like a $500 watch lol

also the hand looks like a broken scissors

Unfortunately, Brexit also caused me to lose some college tuitions from my net worth… So it is probably not a good time to justify luxury item purchase…
