I am moving to Charlotte in August from South Africa - does anyone have any experience working in Charlotte, what is the job market like for CFA candidates. Any good firms hiring at the moment? An equity research role would be my first choice, but I am not too fussy, looking for anything that would count towards CFA experience
What’s your academic and professional background? What’s your visa status? Just saying, CFA credentials are merely the icing on the cake. Many employers wouldn’t care if you have it or not.
I don’t know if there is a lot of equity research stuff in Charlotte. A lot of the jobs there lean towards fixed income stuff for BofA or Wells Fargo. There are some other random commercial bank and insurance stuff there as well. It’s probably best for you to go to efinancialcareers.com or something like that, and see what jobs are listed.
like ohai mentioned before, wells fargo + BOA are the big ones down there. Not sure if there’s much else.
downtown is pretty small on the scale of cities. it’s definitely growing, but real estate/food prices have increased significantly over the past few years because of this
Be prepared to wait! Hiring process is in North Carolina take two times as long as other places. Recruiters spend their time and energy placing key roles in bigger markets. In the Charlotte area, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, LPL Financial, Babson Capital, BB&T, First Citizens Bank, Dixon Hughes Wealth, etc. If you get into the Research Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), may have firms like Captrust, Hatteras Funds, multiple RIAs, and technology companies such as Ipreo, Sageworks, SAS, etc. I am trying to find work out there (research triangle), and have been for 6 months. It seems like the industry there is very integrated, and people switch roles every few years to monetize their experience. Musical chairs. Not much room for an outsider to come in at a mid senior-level. Most opportunities are entry only. I hope this helps!
I am going over on a L2 Visa - my wife accepted a job in Charlotte, we are leaving South Africa on Thursday
I have experience in risk and performance reporting + compliance monitoring for hedge funds, financial analyst, and spent some time doing hedge fund accounting in the Caymans.
I have a finance degree from a South African University, which I don’t think will mean anything in the US. I was thinking of writing the FRM exam in November, is the FRM designation well known/recognized in the US? Will it add value to my resume or is there something else I should rather do?
I am not really into Nascar…but looking forward to NFL, basketball and baseball, and to do some traveling in America
