I just took my CFA level III 2 weeks ago. I have been working as a financial analyst in a small RIA on the east coast. I am getting married in November and planning to move to Baltimore late December or early January. Is anyone aware of any investment firms or hedge funds in the DC - Maryland area that I could explore?
trow, lmcm, etc. baltimore has a hub. Lot of turnover at both firms right now.
DC has a small hedge fund called the federal reserve that is hiring
And judging from Obama’s comments last night, they might be looking for a new Chairman.
The buy side community down here is a bit more scattered than, say, New York, LA, or Chicago. T. Rowe Price and Legg Mason are probably the two biggest. If you want to break into a hedge fund in the area it’s going to take a lot of networking and cold calling as there aren’t that many, they usually have small head counts, and hire sporadically. Email me directly if you have more specific questions and I’m happy to answer more privately.
Dan, I’d certainly like to talk more. Where do I email you?
Thanks for the input, everyone!
If youre moving to Bmore you do not want to commute to DC or Virginia. There are a couple FoF’s in DC and some OCIO firms in Virginia if you can stomach the commute. Bmore is def T. Rowe.
Sure, I’m open to Virginia, Philly, DC, MD. Pretty much everything within a 2 hour commute distance. In the worst case, I’ll look at NYC as well. I have some time before making the actual move since the wedding is in November and I plan to take a break then. Also, not many firms will be willing to hire during the holiday season so my best bet will be to look at something that starts in January.
I did talk to the folks at T. Rowe for an associate analyst position but the gentleman in charge felt like I might get bored at an entry level position since I am 30 and already have an MBA and close to completing the CFA exam requirements.
Wow! Your situatioin is very similar to mine. My wife got a pharmacist job in Balt, so now I’m looking to move down there. I also took level 3 this past June, but no MBA. I saw that associate analyst position at T Rowe. Who did you talk to over there?
Don’t remember the name. It’s been a while. It’s taking longer than I had expected. There are hardly any companies there. When are you thinking about moving?
Steely Dan, I’d like to ask you more questions privately. I am new to AF. Is there a way to message you privately?
There used to be private message option but it’s not available any more. Just make email ID dedicated for AF and post it here for correspondence with Dan or anyone else for that matter.
Sorry for the delayed response! Feel free to email me at “Steelydanaf” at gmail. Happy to help in any way I can.
