Last time I took the exam was in 2016 when we had 11 essay questions, and 10 vignettes of 6 questions each.

With the switch to CBT and the shorter time 2.25 hours vs 3 for each half, I’m assuming we’ll see 8 essays and 7-8 vignettes of 5-6 questions totaling 45 qs? Is this right?

Not necessarily. There is no standard approach taken by CFAI from my understanding. The AM portion might have range from 8 - 10/11/12/13 questions depending how they like to allocate the marks.
As for afternoon MCQ portion, they will have vignettes consisting either 4 or 6 qns between them for a total of 44 qns
