Local Society rejection - SYD

Hi All,

I put in 76 months of work experience, signed off by CFA, and then rejected by Sydney society. There is no reason on the work experience page. I spoke to my sponsor, and he said they had been trying to get hold of him, but they keep and missing each other. Anyone else experience the same or similar. I am so tired of waiting. HELLLPPPPP!

That is a very odd situation. Once CFAI approves work experience , the society approval is nearly always just a rubber stamp and a formality. It’s rare to get shot down at the society if cfai ok’d it

I guess SydneyDoesn’tRock *rim shot*

What was your work experience?

Work experience, M&A and Asset allocation. I got an email back from CFAI, which they said it was as they couldn’t check my work experience. So I may have to just wait another month, for the next committee meeting :frowning:

Thank you for contacting us. The reason on file that the society gave us was there was an anomaly with one of your sponsors. This may be because the sponsor did not clarify the work experience that you submitted, but it may be for another reason. I encourage you to continue contacting the society for clarification.

@ SYDNEYROCKS

I read this post with much anxiety. I too am applying to the Sydney society and in checking my application yesterday I see that I have passed CFA review but am awaiting the local society review.

Must say I felt like it was a done deal when I saw the first box ticked, however in coming across your post today I must say I am particularly tentative about what to expect from my local society review (at some stage in the next month).

My experience is a little different to yours (financial planning), but after reading this, who knows what to expect.

I’ll post once my decision comes through (good or bad).

I honestly now after the email from CFAI, is that they couldn’t get hold of my CFA sponsor. I don’t actually think it is my work experience.

Why can’t they (your Sponsor and /or the Society official) simply fix a mutually agreeable time by email or phone in this era of communication technology? A lesson for other applicants: (a) Ensure your Sponsor is not ‘so busy or is scarcely available’ or is supportive enough to fix a mutually agreeable time to contact (by himself or thro’ his/her Secreatry, if a big boss) that your verification process is a casualty. (b) It may not be crucial /important and timebound for the Sponsor but for you it is so be sure he/she realises it before you give his/her name.

Sydneyrocks, One can understand your frustration but hope it gets resolved before next meeting and is not held up due to no fault of yours.

People are busy, but you are right it is frustrating. I can’t control it…it will just make it sweeter once I do get over the line!

Can someone explain the process for getting the chartholder after passing L3?

You simply apply for regular membership (either now or after passing L3) and once this has occured, you are granted CFA Charterholder status either around September (if you are already a regular member by this date) or once you have been granted regular membership with approved work experience by both the CFAI and your local society.

Thanks, Herrgrunta. In terms of applying to the local society, is attendence to events organised by the local society a factor in gaining their approval? I have not been very active.

Is there a standard template on the CFA Institute website for completing the regular membership application? Do I have to prepare a document?

You apply online. There are links on CFAI website - it’s a quite simple and really intuitive process, don’t worry.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, finally got my approval. Instantly ticked to CFA charterholder once I had paid my fees. Feels better than passing the exam!

+100 Agreed with the statement, ‘Feels better than passing the exam’

Well done

Congratulations! Asset allocation and M&A is definitely qualifying work experience. The culprit was one of your sponsors!
